Is Monsanto the World's Most Evil Corporation?

“Evil” is a word most people don’t use lightly. Yet the majority of NaturalNews readers didn’t hesitate when asked to name the Most Evil Corporation of the Year in an online survey this week. More than 16,000 voters participated, and an astonishing 51 percent gave Monsanto the dubious prize. (The Federal Reserve took a distant second with 20 percent of the votes, followed by British Petroleum with 9 percent and Halliburton with 5 percent.)

How bad is Monsanto? Mother Earth News writer Barbara Pleasant answered that question in a “Happy Homesteader” post last year. “In 2006 the corporate giant bought Delta and Pineland, a leading producer of cotton seed, so that it now controls a huge share of the cotton seed market,” Pleasant reports. “Monsanto’s genes are in about 95 percent of commercial soybeans and 80 percent of commercial corn, and people like the attorney generals of Iowa and Texas are concerned that Monsanto’s business practices violate federal antitrust laws that protect free competition. When it comes to licensing agreements, Monsanto is reportedly a big time bully.” Monsanto’s misdeeds are well chronicled in Christopher Leonard’s excellent article, “Monsanto Stomps Down Budding Seed Competitors.”

NaturalNews editor Mike Adams believes readers overwhelmingly chose Monsanto because of its touchy-feely corporate spin that tries to position the company as the savior of life on planet Earth.” He cites the "Monsanto pledge," which claims integrity and sharing of knowledge and technology as corporate values. “To anyone who knows anything about Monsanto, these words must strike them as particularly nauseous,” Adams writes. “For a company that thrives on GMO seeds and is an aggressive opponent of open-pollinated seeds to talk about ‘sharing knowledge’ and ‘helping farmers’ is enough to make you quite literally vomit.”

Adams offers the following resources to help us learn more about the corporation’s efforts to squeeze competitors, control smaller seed companies and protect its dominance over the multibillion-dollar market for genetically altered crops:

Is Monsanto truly the world’s most evil corporation? I’m pretty convinced. Drop us a line and let us know what you think.

Repairmanscully: yours is one of the more realistic and balanced comments on here. I fear people do not appreciate the challenge of feeding the earth's population and without scientific intervention, we would be in serious trouble. Not knowing enough about them, I can't really comment on Monsanto's business practices... some of them don't sound very nice if true but that is a separate matter. As you mentioned, GM has been around a LONG time.

We need a lot of help in South Africa to resist Monsanto. Monsanto seeds are flooding our market forcing us to have to buy their seeds and associated pesticides. This effectively takes away our food security and makes them rich. I can't believe Kulula airways (one of South Africa's biggest 3 airlines) allowed a full page Monsanto advert in their in-flight magazine, "khuluma". Check it on page 17 next time you fly kulula, I will "khuluma" now and say no to Monsanto, and Kulula must stop allowing immoral companies to advertise with them.

Seeds of Reprisal: Monsanto vs Michael White I am completing a book about a farmer’s battle with Monsanto that I think you might find interesting. “Michael White, a seed merchant and fourth generation farmer, was living the American Dream on Alabama’s Sand Mountain. But the dream disintegrated into a nightmare soon after he spotted a man from Monsanto spying on him.” Please click on the following link for more information. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sor/seeds-of-reprisal-monsanto-vs-michael-white?ref=live Sincerely, J. "We voted" that food co. didn't have to list everything their products contained...the food giants and "farmers" said food labeling would drive the cost of foods up making trips to the market cost hundreds of dollars more.... (i knew that was a lie, a few extra words left out wouldn't cost more on labels they already made), but the general population belived this and voted against this so called extra cost! now Monsano and others dont have to say that we have crap in our food.....we the people where duped! and Monsano is taking over everything we will all starve in the long run fruits and vegatables won't have no nutritional value left in them.

Many people are already doing so much, let's do more! They have no right over us and do not have the moral authority to dictate the affairs of the health of the planet. That being said, we should boycott all things having to do with Monsanto, get well informed! I live in an organic ecovillage in Arizona founded by Gabriel of Urantia (http://gccalliance.org/resume/) in the 80s. Our entire lifestyle is active dissension against Monsanto. Key thing, get seeds from trusted non-gmo sources, preserve them, and learn to grow your own food... build up that local food economy! And get active active active, there's so much we can do. Check out also Avalon Gardens and our efforts to grow organic and heritage crops: http://avalongardens.org/

Those in favor are either ignorant or paid be Monsanto, this world is controlled by a very small group of people who use governments and television to keep us in line. These are the same people who own and control what we watch on TV, medication, civil security and legislation to name a few. Their mission is to control population and reduce it to 5,ooo,ooo people (see the Georgia Guidestones) worldwide, ultimately they follow Satan himself.

The Bible warns us that this would come. Get to know your Creator and follow his will. You will find peace in the fact that this world is not the home of those of us who do Gods will!

People are genuinely good at heart, and Monsanto is not an exception.  STOP THE HATE.  I think I need to reiterate that because "holier than thou" is too often assumed when it comes to companies.  Just because you disagree with their methods simply means you don't understand their methods.  At the end of the day, farmers sign contracts with these guys to use their seeds YEARLY (important because they recognize the benefits of the product and they use them time and time again, they are not stupid people), which they put TONS of money and research efforts into developing.  They are protecting their research like any other company would try to do when holding a patent (Apple vs Samsung, etc).  CROP PROTECTION is one of the most important aspects of agriculture as we know it today.  Farmers are well aware of that fact.  Monsanto is focused on providing that service.  Are there unintended consequences?  Perhaps.  But they are by no means evil.  They are one of the biggest contributors this world has ever known to feeding our overpopulated planet.  IMO they deserve some appreciation, not articles like this bashing their products because of a few bad stories.  Documentaries like Food, Inc. don't provide both sides of the argument and are ignorant to the big picture of agriculture and intellectual property.  Further, if you disagree with genetic modification, then you are in need of some research.  People loveeee to complain about genetically modified corn.  They love it!  But guess what?  CORN HAS BEEN GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS.  Genetic modification happens NATURALLY.  They are simply speeding up the process by rapidly doing it.  GM is a truth of the world.  Every product you eat has gone through traditional genetic modification to further its productivity, resistance to pests, yield and drought resistance.  Go research teosinte (corn's ancestor that has been cross-bred until it yielded what we call corn today).  Our population of farmers is next to nothing, whereas before herbicides and other products of the oil industry were used to produce food we required over 25% of the population to farm.  To feed 1 billion people.  Take a look at the big picture for a second.  While I certainly agree that everyone should focus their lives specifically on limiting their overall carbon footprint through eating local, organic, vegan, etc., I also think people need to recognize that it is through science and technological advances that they as a person even EXIST.  OF COURSE they are going to be strict in enforcing their patents.  At the end of the day, it is a business, and the farmers have signed an agreement.  Their seeds are capable of reproduction, capable of easily being stolen and they could suffer greatly because of rampant disregard for their intellectual property if they didn't enforce their patents and take it out on the little guy (who is trying to cheat them).  If the farmers don't agree with their method, they can grow conventional seeds.  But they choose to grow Monsanto seeds because they KNOW they are superior in all the agricultural aspects that affect overall production.  This company is misunderstood, not evil.  I work in intellectual property and have no stake in Monsanto except in supporting the overall quality of life on this planet for all.

Yes, Monsanto is a terrible Company, a satanic organization, Google "agent orange kids" and you see what they did to this kids in the past, you get the tears in your eyes, this company must be banned and quickly. And Bill Gates you must shame yourself to join this club of murderers. I have no respect for you anymore, you are thinking only in dollars, the farmers (suicide) you don't care about, disgusting.

I went to Home Depot the other day to buy some potting soil. While I was there, I googled most of the brands to see if Monsanto had any ties with them. It seems that all brands did. And a few I couldn't find a definite answer. Does anyone know of a potting soil that has no ties whatsoever to Monsanto. I live in an apartment complex so I can't run out to my backyard grab some soil to make my own and I would like to compost but too hard here. I want to buy some potting soil but know that my money is not going to Monsanto.

From what I've read, Monsanto does genetic testing of suspect crops (I agree they shouldn't have a right to go on private property of those who have not bought thier seeds & signed the contract) and they do not sue if there is only random, low gene frequency apparent. The two cases getting all the press have something like 90% GMO plants: prima facia evidence of seed saving & not random scatter of pollen...To Ms. Weed: a glich in the system enterd my post under Anonymous. I'm not trying to fool anyone. Subsequent post came under my name. It is I who tries to point out to others how they're being fooled by authors with an agenda not supported by the science.

You ARE an employee of Monsanto and you last posted the same comment under the name of T Brandt, who do you think you are fooling? Monsanto is a stinkin' french company... a lot of the seed they 'make' is 'travelling' seed... it will migrate from one farmer's fields to another... from the field where the bought 'made' seed was planted, to another farm where NO such seed was bought or planted. (BTW, God doesn't like that claim... that a company 'made' the seed, you know, and his retribution is coming, tick tock tick tock)... If Monsanto thinks there is nothing the world's people can do, they doesn't understand human nature...

http://www.monsanto.com/newsviews/Pages/why-does-monsanto-sue-farmers-who-save-seeds.aspx Somebody's lying. According to the Monsanto site, they only sue those who save seeds after promising not to. I don't know why anyone would save hybrid seeds: their price is only 10% of input costs, yet at least 25% (theoretically) will not breed true. With corn at $6/bu, you'd be losing a lot of money. ..Is Monsanto any more evil than the authors, producers & artists who want to censor The Web to protect their IP or distort facts to get their POV across?

@Anonymous "It should be noted that farmers who buy patented seeds from Monsanto sign a contract that prohibits them from saving seed from the resulting crops for future use. It is only a handfull of family farms who break that contract out of a million US farms, who are sued for patent infringement." In Food, Inc., the filmmakers talked to people who ran (notice the past tense) operations with non-hybrid corn, meaning they saved their own non-Monsanto seed for the next year. Their neighbors across the fence used Monsanto GMO seed. Due to the proximity, some of the GMO pollen would cross with their corn and end up in the genetic code of their seed corn. Monsanto would then come in at will, test for and find their GMO genetics, and then sue the farmers for "stealing" their IP (intellectual property). They've also put just about everyone out of business who used to come in and clean seed for farmers out of business by suing them as accessories to the "theft" of their GMO IP. So I'd say they're evil also, and I'm a libertarian! Cheers, GEN

Here is my question: How do we stop this evil giant from killing our planet? If corporations are indeed people, then it should be possible to prosecute for the murder, mayhem, etc., that they wreak on the world. How do we stop them?

DAVID BUNIN

Yes, Monsanto is very likely the most evil corporate entity ever to exist on Earth. But where is the United States government when it comes to protecting and serving the people? Why is it not absolutely mandatory that any and all food for sale that contains GMOs be prominently labeled as such? Is it not our right as human beings, let alone as Americans, to know what we're eating?

ABDUL RAHAMAN
1/2/2012 7:24:48 AM
Monsanto's money originally came from the slave trade of Puerto Rico. To insure against a slave rebellion, the Monsantoes used "piking" and other forms of torture to control their massive slave colonies. When slavery was outlawed, the Monsanto heiress moved to the U.S. mainland and put her inheritance in her husband' s newly formed antibiotics business anchored by the governments large contracts for the newly discoverd penicillin. Now Monsanto wants the congress to make it against the law to tell the public that a food contains Genetically Modified Organisms. Basically they want the congress to "legalize" lying. A lie only serves evil, the devil. How does that ever work out for good?

First, a discalimer: I don't work for Monsanto. I don't own their stock. nor do I buy their products. It should be noted that farmers who buy patented seeds from Monsanto sign a contract that prohibits them from saving seed from the resulting crops for future use. It is only a handfull of family farms who break that contract out of a million US farms, who are sued for patent infringement. These patented seeds allow farmers to use less artificial fertilzers and less pesticides and get by with less irrigation and to feed more people on less land. It would seem the good Mansanto does outweighs the bad. We all benefit from their greed. Profit motive drives innovation.

MonSatan? A look through their bag of dirty tricks and wrongdoing should convince most it's time to dismantle this killer corporation. Put teeth back in the anti-trust laws governing monopolies. Find any areas where the corporate veil of protection has been breached and sue both the company and individuals responsible. Demand laws requiring the labeling of GMOs and ingredients containing GMOs. Become a relentless activist on this issue. Create a crowdsourced fund to financially support Monsanto employees ready blow the whistle and who fear reprisal. I'm sure big M ensures the message, "You'll never work in this town, country, earth, again" gets to potential whistleblowers. Ferret out, expose and stop cronyism among government regulators allowing these travesties to continue. Boycott Monsanto products and investment vehicles.

Evil is not even enough of a word to describe Monsanto. They are the devil... the master of deception. They have been securing the worlds seed, while most of the planet is distracted with "terrorism" and "the economy". They have groomed countless politicians (once Monsanto employees) and worked on them until they had the "right" experience and resumes to get into office. Former Monsanto employees and attorneys hold positions in just about every area of our federal government and regulatory bodies. They have insured their free reign (even on the supreme court). It isn't just the GMO's I am upset about, it is the Chemicals. Their GMO seeds are just a device for the absolute necessary sale of their chemical pesticides and such which have done immense damage throughout the world. They are solely responsible for the end and suicide of countless farms and farmers (particularly in third world countries). They are the most evil entity on the planet and I have no idea what it would take to stop them.

Just the word Monsanto makes my blood boil. My wife and I are big into healthy naturally grown food. Thus, we do a lot of research. Part of that research includes watching "food" documentaries. In just about every documentary there is at least a small story about Monsanto crushing the spirit (and finances) of a family owned farm. It's sick and wrong!
