Good oral hygiene is, of course, the product of regular dental checkups and cleanings. In between such visits, the use of natural and herbal dental care using our favorite herbal preparations, mouthwashes and toothpastes, as well as a little first aid in the temporary treatment of canker sores and toothaches, is a valuable addition to even the best care.

We all know about halitosis or bad breath. Although not the only source of the problem, at least one of the causes is bacterial action on food in the mouth. Besides regular brushing, the use of herbal mouthwashes can make us sweeter company for others. Here are some tried and true recipes.

Mix 1 teaspoon each of rosemary, peppermint and lavender. Mix the herbs well and then place 1 teaspoon of the mixture in a cup of boiling water. Steep 15 minutes, then strain. Cool and use as a mouthwash.

Mix 2 teaspoons of sugar, 3 drops of peppermint oil, 3/4 teaspoon of boric acid solution and 4 cups of water. Add food coloring if desired. Put into a quart bottle and shake well. Remember not to drink, just gargle.

Pour 2 cups of boiling water over 3 tablespoons of angelica seeds. Add peppermint, lemon verbena, caraway and rosemary for extra strength. A touch of orris root will perfume the breath with the smell of violet. Cover and steep until cool. Strain and store in a tightly closed container.

Scientific studies suggest that "gargling" sugar water activates neurons in the brain that deal with self control, and attention, if you will. As I read the article on this study . . . it is supposed that doing this practice will do less of providing energy but more of increasing our personal consciousness as to what we are doing . . . so maybe a smoker will have more self control before lighting up. What this has to do with teeth I would only assume is a boost of keeping what's important to us, important to us(:

Incredible, the recipes are so natural and wonderful. I am eager to use this recipes as soon as possible. Currently, I am using only two natural dental products. One is herbal toothpaste and other is http://www.comvita.co.nz/healthcare/propolis.html. The main reason why I use Propolis is it fights all oral problem. Propolis is rich in anti-bacterial properties and nutrients, which keep teeth and mouth healthy.

Soak a cotton ball with ammonia and place it over the aching tooth. Really? This disturbs me more than sugar! Ammonia and chlorine bleach are the two most dangerous chemicals! And you are going to put it in your mouth? WOW!

I'm a bit appauled by the advice given here. First off...sugar in a mouth wash? Isn't sugar the primary decomposer of teeth? Also, grinding lemon on the teeth...the citric acid eat the tooth enamel away more than the sugar! :(
