Get to know Mike Orr of Fox Chapel Publishing.
What are you going to speak about
at the MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR?
I
am going to speak about the
history of homemade/cigar box guitars as well as perform some building
demonstrations.
What are you most looking forward
to sharing with FAIR attendees?
I look
forward to sharing my experience and insight with others about the
building/creative process and try to offer any helpful tips & tricks I’ve
learned along the way.
Tell us about your background
with your particular topic.
I have
always liked building and making things on my own using recycled
materials. About 6 years ago, I saw a cigar box guitar online and decided
to try and build one myself. Six years later, I am making 3 & 4
string cigar box guitars, cigar box bass guitars, banjos, hubcap guitars, bed
pan guitars, electric washboards, ironing board lap steel guitars, washtub
basses and about any handmade instrument that intrigues me.
Why should fairgoers attend your
presentation?
To learn
a new hobby/do-it-yourself project that is a little bit out of the ordinary and
fun! Home made guitars are arts and crafts.
How will you get to the FAIR, and
how far do you have to travel?
I will
be driving from Shade Gap, PA but I am based out of Harrisburg, PA. It
will be a hundred mile trip there and about 150 miles to get back home.
What are you most looking forward
to at the FAIR?
I am
excited to meet and greet with the other presenters and learn about all their
different ideas. I’m also excited to meet the people who will be coming
by my booth.
What advice do you have for
attendees?
I would
suggest that they be creative and think outside the box. This is where
I’ve come up with some of my most interesting creations.
If you were stranded on a
deserted island and could have only one thing, what would you choose?
My
toolbox.
Thanks, Mike. We’ll see you at
the FAIR!
