This easy vintage crochet Christmas stocking pattern uses single crochet and chain stitch to make a charming pinstripe.
Simple crochet seed stitch is transformed into something special with just a change of color. Beginning with slip knot on hook, insert hook into stitch or space indicated, yarnover, pull up a loop, yarnover and pull through both loops on hook.
Project Notes
Stocking is worked in the round from the top down, with an opening made for the heel. The heel is worked in rounds without joining, after the foot and toe are complete.
Change colors with a slip stitch at the end of every round as directed.

Chain an even number, join with slip st in first ch to form a ring, being careful not to twist chain.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, working in back bump of each ch around, sc in first ch, *ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch; rep from * around, omitting last sc; with next color join with slip st to first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 2 (counts as ch-1 space), *skip 1 sc, sc in next space, ch 1; rep from * around, omitting last ch-1, with next color join with slip st to 2nd ch of ch-2.

How to Crochet the Stocking
Leg
With A and larger hook, ch 48, join with slip st in first ch to form a ring, being careful not to twist chain.
Work Seed Stitch in the Round using one round of each color in the following sequence: A, B, C, A, B, C, A, B, C. Cut C. Working stripes of one round each of A and B only, work even until piece measures 12 inches/30.5 cm from beginning, ending with a round of B. Do not cut B.
Divide for heel: With A, work in pattern, ending join with slip st to first ch. Continuing with A, ch 24, skip 24 sts, slip st in next sc. Fasten off, leaving an 8-inch/20.5 cm tail.
Foot
With B and larger hook, pull up a loop in same st as slip st; (sc in back bump of next ch, ch 1, skip 1 ch) 12 times, sc in next ch-space (same st as slip st), (ch 1, skip 1 sc, sc in next space) 11 times, ch 1, skip 1 sc; with A, join with slip st to first sc. Work even in stripes of A and B until foot measures 5 inches/12.5 cm.
Cut A and B.
Toe
Rnd 1: With C and larger hook, work in established pattern. Remainder of Toe is worked in rounds without joining. Place marker in first st of round and move up each round as you work.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc and ch-1 space around. (48 sc)
Rnd 3: *Sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around. (36 sc)

With A, smaller hook and RS facing, standing sc in space at center back leg, ch 8, sc in each sc and ch-1 space around, join with slip st to first sc. Fasten off.
Finishing
Using yarn tails, sew holes at toe and heel closed. Close any gaps at corners of heel. Weave in ends.
