Building My Net Zero Energy Home: Reinforcing ICF Walls

ICF walls went up quickly. As each course was erected, we inserted horizontal rebar for reinforcement. After the walls were up, they needed to be reinforced internally and externally at corners and other key locations to prevent blowout – concrete blowing out the walls. This can create quite a mess and an absolute nightmare for the builder.

Scaffolding (shown above) allowed workers access to the top of the wall to pour concrete into the ICFs. It also helped support the walls. Notice the two by four braces in the corner. Braces were screwed into the plastic bridges in the ICFs.
