I read with interest your article on homemade pizza (The Secret to Incredibly Easy Homemade Pizza, February/March 2012). In your pizza-making arsenal, you list baking stones, which cost about $50.
Here’s my suggestion: Go to your local floor covering store and buy a large (12-by-12-inch) ceramic floor tile. It will cost one-tenth the price of the baking stone — or even less if the store has only a few left of a batch. It probably won’t last as long as a baking stone, so you may want to buy two.
I’ve been using these for pizza for the past 10 years and am currently using only my third one.
