The Ethicurean, a fantastic blog about sustainable eating (eth•i•cu•re•an n. Someone who seeks out tasty things that are also sustainable, organic, local and/or ethical), contained an eyebrow-raising post yesterday: A report from the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy found that many widely consumed food products containing high fructose corn syrup also contain mercury. The connection? HFCS is manufactured with an ingredient that is sometimes still produced in outdated industrial chlorine plants that rely on mercury-based technology. The ingredient (caustic soda) becomes contaminated and in turn contaminates the syrup.

Researchers tested 55 products and found mercury in nearly one-third of them, including Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup, Nutri-Grain Strawberry Cereal Bars, Jack Daniels Barbeque Sauce and more.

The report from Environmental Health:

Wondering how you’ll live without Hershey’s Syrup? Here’s some comic relief from the guys who brought you King Corn. It’s a hilarious spoof of those ridiculous HFCS ads that were sponsored by The Corn Refiners Association.

There is a difference between corn syrup and high-fructose corn syrup. High-fructose corn syrup is made from altered corn starch. Corn syrup has been around since the Civil War. I doubt that either are good for you because of the high use of genetically altered corn used to make either product. I have eliminated ALL high-fructose corn syrup from my diet. I don't believe the product is safe. I am sure that a number of diseases are related to the use of high-fructose corn syrup. Fibromyalgia may be caused by the consumption of high fructose corn syrup.

Could this be another (possible) link to Autism, ADD ADHD? Practially everything you see or eat has corn syrup in it unless you make your own and control the ingredients. I think that people need to be more aggressive to companies about their products, but again, also, with the economy being in a tailspin, people are going to buy cheap, and not pay attention to ingredients, everything is in a catch-22 situation, I really do not have words to give to the situation except buyer beware and try to buy healthy and/or control/make your own products as much as possible.

Have any of the elemental baby formulas been tested? My grandson practically lived on it because he was diagnosed with a protein allergy. I am worried about the mercury content in his body.
