The following energy news briefs were drawn from multiple sources.

Universal Solar Kitchen

C.J. Swet of the Applied Physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University has designed quite an interesting apparatus he calls a Universal Solar Kitchen. Very simply, his "kitchen" has been calculated to efficiently collect the sun's energy, pipe the heat to a convenient point of use, and do it in a manner compatible with the existing ethnic and regional domestic practices of widely varying cultures. Swet figures that his unit can be constructed for less than $100.

Alternative Energy Products

Another school gets an alternative source of power! Environmental Energies, Inc, has installed a windplant for a grade school in the Detroit, Michigan area. The unit is running and is supplying all the electricity used in one classroom and part of the "juice" consumed by a second. Al O'Shea, of EEI, is currently hard at work on a store that will handle alternative living products ... and which will be lit, heated, cooled, etc., by sun, wind, and other "soft technology" systems.

Energy Crisis Skepticism

Oil Industry Officials, mining spokesmen, heads of government agencies, consumer groups, environmentalists and others continue to fill the air so full of claims and counterclaims that it's difficult to get a fix on the real status of the world's "conventional" energy sources. To make matters worse, Joe Public increasingly seems to feel that the paper tiger nature of the recent energy "crisis" proves that there's really no problem at all. Not so! Look for steadily climbing electric bills and spot shortages of fuel oil and natural gas again during the coming winter. And beyond that? Nobody knows, but some smart money is already betting that a real energy crisis is lurking somewhere just over the horizon.

Solar Heating Installation

Solar energy is suddenly "in" as dozens of huge corporations and government agencies thrash about in search of a replacement for fossil fuels. Many of the hastily conceived crash programs are wasteful and hardly worth the time and money going into thern, but one notable exception seems to be "the first solar heating system to be installed in a high school in the United States." InterTechnology Corporation designed, fabricated and installed what a company spokesman calls "a completely automated, self-operated system which serves 100% of the space we were directed to heat. The collector is 126' X 26' and has been operating at efficiencies from 53 to 63%." Perhaps most impressive of all, the entire assembly was started January 22, 1974 and completed just 57 calendar days later!

Methane Generation

L. John Fry—the man who, for six years, ran a 1,000-head South African pig farm almost entirely on methane made from the hogs' droppings—will soon publish a definitive book about the anaerobic digestion process and its by-products. Fry is a storehouse of information on the subject and methane experimenters in all parts of the world are sure to find his manual both interesting and informative. The book will sell for $12.00 a copy (ouch!) but is sure to be worth the price. Look for its release by no later than mid-August. MOTHER EARTH NEWS will review the handbook.

There is a concept that creates the new approach in alternative energy arena. We are at a threshold of a very beautiful planet filled with clean, costless and endless energy and a time to enter is at our disposal now. This is a concept to manipulate the power of interactions between air and water in our surroundings by comprising unique gadgets into a working system. The perpetual-motioned machine that can generate electric current every minute around the clock anywhere on this planet regardless the weather conditions at any given locations. Further more, there are technically no running costs because this apparatus is driven by the most powerful, reliable and costless forces in the world, the forces of gravity and buoyancy. We generally utilize these two forces on our everyday life unawares of a great potential that can benefit our lives in a big way. This concept unveils this potential and bring it out to serve our needs. It ultimately becomes a powerful tool to remove the roadblock for hydrogen production. Good things that hydrogen can do are nothing new to our knowledge but hydrogen production has hit the roadblock and dead on its track, going nowhere for decades. It requires a significant amount of electric current to extract a usable amount of pure hydrogen out from water. So it is too costly to use electric current from burning fossil fuels. On the other hand, free electric current from renewable technologies available today can not produce hydrogen enough to fulfill our growing demand for consumption. So hydrogen becomes inadequate to serve our needs as a result. Here is when this concept plays a major role to remove this roadblock. Now that we have ample supply of free electric current to produce hydrogen endlessly by electrolyzing water. Water can be from any available sources so hydrogen production is technically costless. Since the apparatus can generate steady current unconditionally around the clock. So there will be a surplus to produce even greater amount of hydrogen. The turnout of this path is even more festive since we are now enable to recycle water to facilitate all of our energy needs. When hydrogen is used as a fuel, it is forced to cohere with oxygen in the air releasing water back to earth. Hydrogen fuel is practically benign for natural elements that nurture our lives from its production to consumption. We start off by splitting water molecules for oxygen and hydrogen. Oxygen is released into the air but hydrogen is kept in a pressurized tank for heating, hot water system, cooking and vehicles. Now that we have ample supply of free electricity and hydrogen we can transform our lives from being mainly reliant on carbon footprint to be entirely extricated from it. There will be no worries of depletion to this energy because we obtain our energy by recycling the source of energy(water), unlike fossil fuels that we consume the source of energy so there will be a depletion at some point of time, not to mention about pollution being emitted to our surroundings. Additionally, we are now enable to decentralize our energy structure which would eradicate problems we are facing from time to time on centralized energy that we now depend on. Because of this concept that allows us to do so. The whole thing can be scaled down to fit in a household. All these will have to start with the apparatus prototype. Please go to to learn about this system and if you agree with the concept, please contribute small donation to the project. Remember! many hands can lift the big project off the ground, anything is possible when a lot of us congregate to do the same thing and finally we all will benefit from it.
