I retired at age 53 with 27 years of being a state worker in December 2009. Before retiring, last year in March I paid a nutritionist $250 to help us with healthier meals. I needed to lose some weight, but my husband needed to lose a lot. Since then, I have lost 18 pounds and he has lost 44 pounds. We never have felt better and my joint problems have gone away. The nutritionist showed us how to make quick healthy meals. We live on an acre and quarter of land with a small vegetable garden with tomatoes, cantaloupe, squash and some herbs. We also have plenty of blackberry bushes, which makes great blackberry cobbler using whole wheat pastry flour (which I buy by bulk). For breakfast, I do a Multi Grain Cereal using steel cut oats, quinoa, amaranth and pearl barley (grains bought by bulk) seasoned with cinnamon, chopped dates and fresh cranberries prepared the night before in my crock pot. We compost, recycle and have a rain barrel to catch what rain we can get down here in Texas. I make my own household cleaners and wash clothes with old-fashion Borax (what my grandmother used) and hang dry what I can. But the most important thing that changed since retiring is that my priorities have changed. I have downsized and sold a lot of my knick knacks that was just dust collectors. It only takes me 30 minutes to clean house now. I am currently working on a healthy recipe book that I hoped to get published in the near future.
