These little pots of lip balm serve a dual purpose, as they work very well as a nail and cuticle cream, too. They’re good gifts for well-groomed friends, particularly if you package them in shatter-proof containers — they’re perfect to carry around in a handbag or briefcase.
How to Make Rose Lip Balm
• 1⁄2 cup sweet almond oil
• 2 tablespoons dried rose petals, dried mint, or dried lavender
• 5 tablespoons beeswax, grated
• 1 teaspoon honey
• 2 vitamin E capsules
Small glass, metal, or plastic pots or jars (1oz is a good size). If they’re going to be left on a dressing table or in a bathroom cabinet, the sort of miniature jam jars that grace many a hotel breakfast are the perfect size.
Place the oil in a small pan with the dried rose petals, mint, or lavender. Warm very gently over low heat for 5 minutes—do not let it boil. Cover and leave to cool and infuse for several hours or overnight.
Strain into a small, heatproof bowl and discard the solids.
Place the bowl with the oil in it over a pan of barely simmering water—the water should not touch the bottom of the bowl. Stir in the beeswax and honey until everything is completely melted and blended. Remove from the heat, pierce the vitamin E capsules with a in and squeeze the contents into the lip balm mixture.
Pour into the pots, cool, and seal. Makes approx. 8 pots
The lip balm will keep for 2 months.
