Construct a compost bin with recycled wood.

Our old redwood deck was rotting from underneath. After removing it and using the better pieces to build a small fence, we still had a pile of tag ends to deal with. What to do with them?

The answer came after attending a composting class presented by the local master gardeners. We trimmed and ripped the remaining boards, found our roll of previously used chicken wire and built a three-bin compost unit. The front slats slide up and out to make turning the compost a cinch. We now have an efficient compost station and used every last board of our old deck.

Massive amounts of old deck and fence wood get burned or put in landfills. Contact fence and deck builders to see about getting some great free wood. — MOTHER
