Pat Stone, GreenPrints Editor and Organic Gardener
Name: Pat Stone
Occupation: Editor, GreenPrints, “The Weeder’s Digest”
Place of Residence: Fairview, NC
Background and Personal History: Pat lives between a mountain and creek in beautiful Western North Carolina. For 12 years, he was Garden and Assistant Editor at MOTHER EARTH NEWS. He built his passive-solar (with passive-solar hot water), wood-heated, 1,800-sq-ft. home in 1984 for under $50,000. He has been married to Becky Stone for 41 years and is the grateful parent of four wonderful, grown children and the grandfather of two.
Current Projects: Pat edits and publishes GreenPrints, “The Weeder’s Digest,” the magazine that shares the personal side of gardening (which has twice won “The Best Small Garden Magazine” Award from the Garden Writers Association). GreenPrints shares gardeners’ experiences from all over the country (and the world) and is full of the inspiration, humor, and heart that we all gain from gardening. Former Organic Gardening Editor Mike McGrath is a regular Contributing Editor. Pat also is co-founder and Chairman of the Board of The Lord’s Acre, a nonprofit garden project in Fairview that grows organic produce (35 tons so far) and gives it away to needy people.
Other Fun Facts: Pat is a passionate whitewater canoeist. He has canoed everything from the Grand Canyon to his tiny creek (when it was in flood—it’s only 8 feet wide!). He also takes middleschoolers out in the woods through a Nature Class he started at a local school, and is a storyteller and a musician. Pat (mandola) and Becky (guitar) lead the worship music at our log church.
