Have you ever suspected that the air in your community is worse than normal? That perhaps your ‘allergies’ were really a reaction to toxins in the air? Well you can find out just what’s in your environment at www.scorecard.org.
The site advertises in-depth pollution reports for your county, covering air, water, chemicals and more. Personally, I was appalled to discover that my home county ranked among the dirtiest/worst 20 percent of all counties in the U.S. for 2002, in terms of total environmental releases.
At Scorecard, you can find out about the most prevalent chemicals in your area, and discover who are the top polluters for your county. There’s even a section about environmental justice, as well as links to send messages to the top polluters.
To do more research on toxic chemicals, also check out the EPA’s Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS). Per the site, ‘IRIS is a database of human health effects that may result from exposure to various substances found in the environment.’
