Baked Green Tomatoes Recipe

Reader Stanton Woodcock's family has been making this Baked Green Tomatoes Recipe for years.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds green tomatoes
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup cubed bread or bread crumbs
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 tablespoon oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon thyme
  • 1/3 cup fresh grated parmesan cheese
  • salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  • Cut 2 pounds of green tomatoes into 1/2-inch thick slices and arrange them overlapping in a lightly oiled baking dish. Sprinkle tomatoes with sugar and salt & pepper to taste.
  • Lightly brown 1 cup of fresh bread cubes or crumbs in 4 tablespoons of butter and combine with oregano, basil, and thyme. Sprinkle the seasoned bread mixture over the tomatoes, top with parmesan cheese and dot with remaining butter.
  • Bake for 45 minutes in a 350 degree Fahrenheit preheated oven.
