| February/March 2011

In our June/July 2010 issue, we ran an article about a unique, great-tasting watermelon variety called ‘Orangeglo.’ In addition to an exotic flavor, ‘Orangeglo’ reportedly delivers high yields on strong vines and has high insect and wilt resistance. The melon itself weighs about 15 to 25 pounds, is oblong and striped, and has a sugary orange flesh. It grows well in regions that are normally considered too cool for other watermelon varieties.

When the profile ran, we were only aware of one seed source — D. Landreth Seed Co. — but we’re pleased to report that we’ve located a few more: Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds and Seed Savers Exchange will also offer ‘Orangeglo’ seed packets.

‘Orangeglo’ watermelon was developed in the 1960s in Poolville, Texas, by the Willhite Seed Co., which is well-known for its melons but doesn’t currently carry ‘Orangeglo’ watermelon.

Learn more about the melon’s history, get expert advice for growing it, and check out some mouthwatering ‘Orangeglo’ recipes in our ‘Orangeglo’ watermelon profile.

I bought some seeds from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange a few weeks ago. I'm excited to grow it!
