Energy-Efficient Appliances: New Standards for Clothes Washers and Dishwashers

The U.S. department of energy is setting new product standards for clothes washers and dishwashers that will reduce energy use and water consumption.

| October/November 2012

New energy-efficiency standards for dishwashers and clothes washers will help conserve both water and energy. Under the new standards issued by the Department of Energy, dishwashers will use about 20 percent less water and 15 percent less energy, and clothes washers will use up to 35 percent less water and energy.

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy estimates these changes will save consumers up to $100 in water and electric bills over the lifetime of a new dishwasher, and as much as $600 for a clothes washer. The new standards are part of a series of improvements to energy-efficiency standards for consumer products, which in recent years has also included revised standards for heating equipment and refrigerators.

The new requirements for dishwashers and clothes washers will go into effect in 2013 and 2015, respectively.
