A few years ago, I went out to pick green beans and almost picked a snake hiding beneath the leaves.

So now, to keep snakes away, I run the tiller or mower around the garden before I go into it. The vibrations drive any snakes back underground. I also run the mower around the house a couple of times a week to drive away any hidden snakes.
