How to Avoid Genetically Modified Food

The average supermarket is full of genetically modified foods. Here’s how you can avoid those products.

October/November 2012

By Robin Mather

In the United States, 70 percent or more of the foods in your supermarket directly or indirectly contain genetically modified (GM) ingredients. The illustration below shows how prevalent GM foods have become on grocery store shelves.

The only way to avoid GM food is to know which ingredients are likely to be genetically modified and read labels carefully, or to always choose organic foods, which are certified GM-free.

Below are estimates of the percentages of GM foods found on store shelves. To learn more about this issue, see The Threats From Genetically Modified Foods.

GM Foods Chart

Dairy/Eggs. Unless it’s labeled organic or rBST-free, everything in the dairy case, including milk, cheese and yogurt, probably contains milk from cows injected with rBST, a GM hormone used to make cows give more milk. It’s also likely that the cows and chickens were fed GM corn, soy and canola.

Meat. GM corn and soy are so dominant in the United States that almost everything in the meat case comes from animals fed GM crops.

Fresh Produce. Not many GM items yet, but GM sweet corn arrived in 2012.

Cereals. Unless labeled as organic, cereals probably include GM ingredients, primarily high-fructose corn syrup and other corn products, soy and milk proteins. Don’t be fooled by “natural” labels; they mean nothing.

Cookies/Snacks/Chips. Almost all include high-fructose corn syrup; soy, corn or canola oil; soy lecithin and other soy isolates; or other additives derived from GM corn and soy.

Pasta/Rice/Beans. You’re pretty safe here, because wheat, rice and beans are not (yet) genetically modified, but watch out for the heat-and-eat pasta meals that include GM ingredients.

Ice Cream/Frozen Prepared Meals. Unless labeled organic, these are virtually guaranteed to have GM ingredients, including corn and soy products, whey protein from rBST milk, and GM beet sugar.

Oils/Fats/Shortening. Olive oil is non-GM. “Vegetable oil” usually is GM, as are corn, soybean and canola oil. Solid shortenings are hydrogenated canola, corn and soybean oil.

Condiments/Prepared Foods. All of these items contain GM soy, corn and/or canola unless labeled organic.

Bread/Crackers. Almost all commercial bread is made with corn syrup and soy-based ingredients.

Don't forget to check for the verified symbol on your olive oil. A lot of unscrupulous companies are "watering down" their olive oil with canola and other cheaper oils. It appears that our government WANTS these toxins in our food supply so we keep the pharmaceutical companies making big profits. They, in turn, stuff a lot of cash incentives in the back pockets of our politicians. That's why they still allow over 300 "non-food" ingredients in the products that are labeled "organic," too. Google the Fed's allowable organic food additives, and you'll be shocked! If you search the internet, there are a lot of GMO veggies/fruit being grown. Papayas, pineapples, soy, zucchini, corn, and sugar beets, to name a few. Not only should they be forced to label the food in the grocery stores if they contain GMO's, but they should have to label crops as well. I don't get why farmers would want to poison their own land to grow something nobody wants to eat!

I was in Europe earlier this year and was I was so surprised how different the was was!!! I was able to eat dairy, meat and a lot of foods I can't eat here in my own country. I avoid a lot of animal products here because they make me break out in acne. But in Europe I had fondue with cheese and meats, in Spain I had pork ham with cheese everyday. In Italy I ate McDonald's and I was fine. I am ssoooo jealous of their food and can not get over why I can't have those foods here. I want to leave this country immediately!!!! This is soooo heartbreaking to me. I'm up in arms about our food.

I buy a lot of vegetables and I am surprised to see that Fresh Produce. Not many GM items yet, but GM sweet corn arrived in 2012.

Like very very surprised! ...

Did you also know that the produce is not that much better anyway? Why? because the vegetables and fruits go through gamma radiation so that they can have longer shelf life. like seriously what is wrong in NORTH AMERICA!?! I wanna LEAVE. NOW. and this article makes me wanna run away from here like I am running away from the devil..

No GM wheat is being grown?  Yet, GM wheat was just discovered in a field in Kansas.  So, how many farmers are growing/selling GM wheat without telling anyone?

Papayas are but try as I may I cannot find any reliable info on how much GMO summer squash is in the food supply. It has been developed but then no data seems to be kept on it. So in the produce dept almost all papayas and sweet corn are GMO and no one can say about summer squash. No other GMO fruits and veggies exist at this time in the US! and I mean that.

Wheat is not GMO. If it is altered it is from breeding not transferring genes.

Tamara Hanson

There is cane sugar (c&h) and there is beet sugar (crystal). Only beet sugar is GMO. When it says sugar on an ingredient list it is most likely beet sugar and GMO, now.

Tamara Hanson

Why not? Do you mean because of contamination of GMOs into organic crops? That is possible but has been exaggerated especially with soy and its self pollinating flowers. If an organic farm is contaminated they lose their certification.

Glad you're feeling better by following a "celiac diet." It's not the GMO that had you sick, it was the gluten- very common problem. Search "inflammatory index" of various foods: you'll find grains are nasty, while meats are low in promoting inflammation.

I think this article must be dated- there are plenty of GM veggies on the market including beets, corn, many other veggies are cross contaminated and at the very least they are sprayed with GMO chemicals and are drowning in it from the rain water. Get fruits and vegetables raised in an organic manner by a farmer you know and you can look directly into their eyes and visit their farm so you can see what their practices actually are. OR RAISE YOUR OWN crops! EVERYTHING in the store is either sprayed or irradiated. RARELY can you find some REAL FOOD.

We need the hi tech to increase production per acre in order to save habitat and keep farming economically viable. ... Not everyone has the space or time to grow their own organic food or the money to buy it. No one should be made to think industrially produced food is unhealthy. Well It appears to be a maze ....... Gm food fed to animals ... then the manura mixed in the compost creates "Killer Compost " kills our plants ..... then we would have to buy their seeds .... will we have to sign contracts like the farmers do, not to keep our own seeds, or be sued by Monsanto, sooner or later they will have control over all of the food, because all the seeds will have terminator genes in them, so we will all have to eat "Soilent Green" (The Charelton Heston Movie) The Sty.Ag. was on Cspan 2009 answering calls and said, more production is the focus.

The modern wheat of today is perhaps the most genetically altered plant that we eat. It is perhaps even worse than the regular GMO’s we hear about so much. It is no longer the staple of life that our forebears ground into their daily bread or the mainstay of most major cultures and religions. Instead it has been genetically altered to provide processed food manufactures with the highest yield at the lowest price though monoculture. No human or animal testing has been done on the new wheat varieties we now use even though they produce radically different proteins. Some of those new proteins are now discovered to be associated with celiac disease but there may be many other consequences.

Most GMOs are also hybrids, so planting seed is not likely to produce a similar plant. It may not germinate at all (terminator genes cause this!) or it can grow very very unpredictably. Do some research, and grow locally grown open-pollinated varieties that adapt to local growing conditions...naturally!

Don't buy the dead animals, then. I'm honest! Buy beans and quinoa-kind of grain that are organic, sustainably grown, and an excellent source of nutrients, and next, find eggs that are from a local farm that were fed organic grains!... You can DO this! If you and your children eat lots of FRESH, NON-GMO vegetables from the farmer's market, vitamin-packed fruits and olive oil, you should be able to BUILD HEALTHY BODIES while you eat the sources of proteins that fit perfectly into the healthy diet! Pineapple has enzymes that are needed to boost uptake of proteins, as well as other enzymes you can supplement with.. Minerals are needed to aid in development of bone and cells, which does NOT come from dairy, but from FRESH, ORGANIC produce! Also, remember mushrooms, green tea, kombucha, sauerkraut, and seaweed as excellent health foods! Much love, and JUST DO THIS!! : D Keep in touch if you need more help!

WOW Robin! PLEASE do some more research on GMOs. 1) BY CONTRACT "you" can't save any of your GM seeds and re-plant them next year. If you do, Monsanto will sue you for breach of contract & theft. 2) Where ever you plant your GM seeds, you MUST BE ABSOLITELY POSITIVE that the wind will NEVER blow in that area. If it does, it will cross polinate/breed with other plants. 3) GM foods are killing all test animals or causing massive tumors and cancer. 4) There has never been sufficient LONG TERM testing on GMOs to determine the health hazards it might cause to humans. 5) GMO seeds are/have been injected with pesticides, which have already proven to cause multiple allergies, diseases and even death to humans. PLEASE, PLEASE do not encourage gardeners to put GMOs in their garden with organic and non-GMO plants. GMOs will contaminate the rest of the garden, so it does not make sense to pay the price for organic seeds when you are going to destroy them with GMOs. The internet is loaded with info about GMOs. Everyone should do extensive research BEFORE deciding to use GMOs.

That's a legitimate criticism of the research literature. Studies are expensive to do and most of the studies are fundied by those who hope to profit from the results. Barring outright fraud in reporting results (it does happen- cf: Climategate) the biggest problem is that we don't know what studies were done but not reported because results weren't favorable to those funding them. This works both ways. Most studies showing health risks include those using only unreasonably hi exposure rates because lower, more realistic exposures don't show problems...I enjoy growing my own. food, done organically because I don't require hi yields to make it profitable. But not everybody is in a position to grow their own and they needn't be unjustifiably scared into spending extra money on food having no real extra benefit. .

Kimberly Galles-Benton
10/22/2012 4:51:55 PM
PLEASE always check the source of the study. You may be surprised at how much of the research on GMOs that assure us they're safe is by the same companies who are profiting from it.

a)Study after study shows there is no health danger in GMO or other industrially produced food. (b) Study after study shows there is no health advantage in organically grown food...If you want to believe, as a matter of faith, that that isn't true, fine. We have religious freedom in ths country....(c) When the low tech (ie- organic) methods were used to produce food prior to 1960, we coud just barely prioduce enough to feed the 2 billion people in the world, Now we have 7 billion. The arithmetic is pretty simple from there....The problem with not using the high tech methods to produce food for the masses is that at the "carrying capacity" of the environment, competiton for resources is at its maximum: we have "jungle-like" conditions of life style. At that point, you may not be dying of imagined GMO-induced-cancer, but you may be getting shot trying to steal your food.

YES. If people start relying on products, such as vitamin-enriched Doritos, for nutritional benefits with this "next generation" of GM foods, wouldn't you? Wake up America! It's time you joined the rest of the world and get back on track with proper growing and eating practices. Be good to your bodies and the environment - it doesn't take rocket science - KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid)! Aside from all of the controversy with human consumption of GM crops (whether the consumer is aware of what they're eating or not), consider what the crops are doing to our planet. The animals consuming these foods are not given a choice (and that includes wildlife), GM crops have cross-pollinated with non-GM crops and now we're fighting to prevent further contamination of heirloom varieties. We're aware of the problem and continue to try to "fix it," but are still experimenting with GM foods; the logical solution is to just STOP.

See my links above for the 2yr French study showing a direct link to cancer from GMO Corn fed to rats. Other studies have shown GMO foods fed to animals has caused organ failure in every organ. The roundup ready GMO corn seeds are even worse... eating holes in the insect's stomachs which in turn does the same to the living beings that eat the produce from these Agent Orange chemical laced GMO seeds. Jeffry Smith is a GMO expert having researched this for decades.

There's also a pay to view movie, www.GeneticRouletteMovie.com, costing $2.99 to view, but we're working to get it on line for free, again, possibly starting this weekend, like maybe Saturday @ midnight, for a week, & possibly until through November 6th, election day in California, when Proposition 37 will pass into law, we hope. We are continuing to raise funds to make the movie available for free. You too can contribute. I've spent over $5000 so far on campaigning and awareness. Nearly 50 other countries require, at least, labeling of GMO containing foods. The only industrialized countries that don't are the USA and Canada. See also NonGMOShoppingGuide.com. Hi Judy - I truly believe that we have reached the point of asking and beginning to believe in the point - "how can we not grow and buy everything organic" ? As an organic grower for over 30 years I have always approached the organic method of soil preparation and building as the best for the planet and the non-use of chemical insecticides, pesticides, herbicides as also the safest and in the long run- cheaper! Now with these new GMO crops comes the heavier use of deadly, genetically altering applications like Round up and others. Monsanto, Dow, Bayer have all been allowed to publish their own "studies" and research - now being disproved and discredited by nearly every major scientific group - and the FDA has allowed GMO foods to enter our market places will no consideration to long term effects and certainly NO DEMOCRATIC choices by the people/consumers in any of it. It takes everyone doing their own soul-searching and whether it be from the growing or eating healthy point of view - a committment to change our diets and our practices and use our economic power - our power to purchase or not purchase - to bring the downfall of large corporate take over of our food supply and most importantly our seed supply.

Th information is great and a nice easy piece to copy and distribute to my farmer's market customers! We need to all work hard to get the word out on GMO and to pass labeling laws - Go California voters - this will be a first loud "death knoll" to the GMO movement. To educate yourselves further, the book or video (which you can find online and watch) "Genetic Roulette" - is very powerful and informative. I had, up until now approached this from a grower's point of view - with major concern over maintaining heirloom and indigenous seed - but now am also turned onto the DEVESTATING effects that GMO foods have on our health! I live in San Juan County, WA - made up completely of islands, and we have a voter placed initiative on our Nov. Ballot to ban sell and intentional growing of GMO seed here in the county. Having been identified as one of only 3 areas in the US that could possibly pull this off - local growers are excited about being able to not only sustain ourselves as GMO free - but create sustainable seed banks to help supply other areas as well.

You may have to make a few small corrections if it doesn't quite transfer the format correctly - but on newer machine with choice to "keep origin formatting" it works like a dream - now you have one to file/print for yourself and an easy attachment to anyone you want to send it to.

Thank you for the information. We need a chart on food that is being irradiated as well. In Canada our wheat, potatoes, onions, spices are being irradiated & it is not labelled. And there is a proposal to irradiated beef, poultry, seafood & mangos . I am very upset realizing what has happened to our food supply & that our governments our not doing better protecting us, but protecting the GMO companies. We are starting to grow our own food & advising our friends & family to do the same. I think many people still don't know or understand what has happened to our food supply. Thank you Mother Earth for helping us educated eachother

What makes the push to use GM in everything even more unforgivable is the fact that it has not lead to crops that are more resistant to insects or disease, or even crops that are higher yielding. If you live in California, vote yes on Proposition 37.

If I may suggest: 1) Look into CSA's (Community Supported Agriculture) @ http://www.localharvest.org/csa/ There is undoubtedly a farm near you. 2) Depending on the size of your family, you can either grow your own on your land, in raised beds, or in containers on the deck/patio. Start small and grow until you can wean yourself off of store bought produce. 3) Become a vegetarian. I know that sounds drastic, but with the health benefits plus removing the horrific cost of meats out of your grocery shopping experience - how can you not! 4) I know places like Whole Foods and other organic grocery stores are expensive, but if you cut our meats and snack foods from your menu, it's worth a try. As an aside, I find it interesting that GM always makes me thing of General Motors. Another fouler of the earth experience.

I am just soooo pleased that here in Europe GM foods must be labelled as GM. But how long for? To make sure, we are selling our apartment to be able to buy a house with garden in the countryside so we can grow our own produce. - Can't wait! :)

I feel the exact same way as Amy F. does. How could anyone ever have allowed our food to come to this in the first place? It's unforgiving, and it's about greed! And... at our expense. I grow what I can, but there's hardly any way around the GMs in the long run, unless we move to another continent/country who has banned them. If we can't afford to buy everything 'organic' here in the U.S., then it's quite doubtful we'd be able to afford the move to another country. It's all very sad....

Dear Mother- I am so discouraged. I just got back from grocery shopping after reading your article. I feel like I am putting poison into my family. I buy as much organic as I can, and yet this article clearly demonstrates the areas that I still am lacking. I don't know what to do about the meat end of things. I spent $600 on groceries as it is and we simply can't afford grass-fed meat. I grow, can, and cook with organic ingredients but it still isn't enough. I don't want to feed my family "frankenfoods", and yet still feel powerless as to another way.

In my opinion, this is them causing us to put things in our body that we don't want there. It is like put illegal drugs in the foods that it gets in our body without us realizing it. This is an invasion of our freedom to choose & it very much affects those on very low incomes who can't afford to buy "organic" products. The government is going too far with our being able to choose.
