To discourage squash bugs, I make a solution of water, onion and garlic scapes.

I let the mixture sit in a gallon jug until it smells really strong, and then I pour the natural pesticide around the base of the squash plants where the bugs seem to congregate. It has worked for me. (You’ll need to reapply after a rain.)
