    Learn three leather stitches – blanket, saddle and whip stitch and the times when each of the stitches are used. Participants will receive a kit that includes the leather pieces to make a 4-inch by 6-inch pouch, needles, artificial sinew and instruction on how to sew the pouch together using the three different stitches.

    Who doesn’t love the hot and spicy kimchi at least that is what the food trends would lead you to believe. Kimchi is the Korean form of vegetable fermentation which has many faces and flavors. It is part of an ancient culinary art that is experiencing a renaissance in this country. Kirsten Shockey aims to demystify this safe technique for creating healthy nutrient dense delicious foods through preservation. We will follow a step by step process to make kimchi. You will learn how to make a kimchi that is just right for you taste buds—be it five-alarm heat or mild. Best of all you will take home your creation to watch ferment on your counter.

In this hands-on session, participants will learn how to curate the perfect ratio for seasoning homemade sausage and dry rub, and then pick from a host of spices and herbs to create their own sausage seasoning blend. Then, one spice blend will be chosen for a live sausage demo and tasting during the class.     Irena Hollowell, Gryphon Corpus, and Sappho Heavey will show you how to clean seeds you’ve harvested in your garden for good germination rates and shelf life. This workshop focuses on the threshing, winnowing, and screening of seeds that mature in dry pods or seedheads (such as beans, okra, and lettuce), and you'll have the chance to try your own hand at winnowing. Hollowell will also briefly touch on the fermentation of seeds that mature wet. These methods are applicable to seeds of flowers and herbs, as well as vegetables. Take home handouts and seed samples. A limited numbers of screens are available for purchase at the FAIR.
