Energy Department Announces Funding for Solar Initiative

The U.S. Department of Energy is funding a $15 million program known as the SunShot Initiative to install solar electricity in homes and businesses.

  • The U.S. is a global leader in solar, and the Energy Department plans to meet the SunShot Initiative goal to make solar energy fully cost-competitive with traditional energy sources by 2020.

In support of the Obama administration’s goal of doubling renewable energy generation for a second time by 2020, the U.S. Energy Department has announced $15 million to help communities develop multi-year solar plans to install affordable solar electricity for homes and businesses. The United States continues to be a global leader in solar, with total U.S. solar energy installations reaching 13 gigawatts in 2013. As the cost of solar energy continues to decline, more states and local communities are deploying solar energy projects to meet their electricity needs.

“As part of the President’s all-of-the-above energy strategy, solar energy is helping families and businesses throughout the U.S. access affordable, clean renewable power,” said Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz. "The Energy Department is committed to further driving down the cost of solar energy and supporting innovative community-based programs — creating more jobs, reducing carbon pollution and boosting economic growth.”

As part of the Department’s SunShot Initiative, the Solar Market Pathways funding opportunity aims to help communities develop solar deployment plans that focus on cutting red tape, building strong public-private partnerships to deploy commercial-scale solar. As part of these solar deployment plans, communities will establish innovative financing mechanisms and launch creative community-based initiatives, such as shared solar programs. Shared solar programs give families and businesses the opportunity to own, lease, or purchase electricity from a share of a larger solar project — reducing overall costs and giving more consumers access to renewable power.

Broadly, the Energy Department funding will help drive affordable, efficient solar power in the United States and help industry partners meet the SunShot Initiative goal to make solar energy fully cost-competitive with traditional energy sources by the end of the decade.  Find more information on the Solar Market Pathways funding opportunity, including application requirements, on the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy website.

Another congressional disgrace. Instead of $15Million it should be $15Billion. With the goal of adding solar to every home, school, and government building in the Nation. Think of the millions of jobs a program of that size would create.

What a wonderful program. What IF the Government offered a program that would take it one step farther: 1: Every home owner should be offered an interest free loan by their State Government to cover the cost of installing a total solar power system producing enough power to maintain their home and solar car. 2: The Government should offer interest free loans to anyone who wishes to convert their vehicle to solar and provide charging stations at cost. 3: This would achieve many goals. Not only would it reduce carbon levels but it would provide employment. It would provide employment for people to be trained and act as consultants to provide expertise to people who want to convert to solar. It would create new employment in the renewable energy domain. It would create employment in the automotive industry for the rush of people who wanted to convert their vehicles to solar. Loan repayment would be determined based on current cost for power and fuel. So what you are currently paying for fuel and power would be the cost of your loan since you would have no power or fuel bill anymore. So no added monthly payments. Industries: I would pass legislation that would require all chimneys be outfitted with scrubbers that would clean the emissions before they exit the chimney. I would hire students to plant trees, millions of trees. It has been suggested if we can reforest the planet by the middle of the century we can begin to reverse the effects of climate change. I would teach people how to save water, reuse grey water and capture water. Be positive and kind to each other and our beautiful planet. We really do need each other.
