Gore’s Challenge: Think Big on Renewable Energy — and Think Fast

Yesterday, Al Gore gave a speech challenging the United States to set a surprising new goal: To produce 100-percent of our electricity from renewable and carbon-free sources within 10 years.

Here’s the text of the speech, and you can check out video highlights below. It’s already gotten a lot of attention, and there’s a nice roundup of reactions to the speech from the blog Gristmill.

Tell us what you think. Is this goal far too ambitious, or is it achievable? Is setting this kind of challenge just the thing we need to start thinking seriously about renewable energy, or should we be aiming for more realistic goals?

ReDuce,ReUse,ReCycle That would be a great place to start! After that we need renewable energy sources like wind, water and solar to power everything(think rechargeable batteries!)biofuel isn't the answer because then we cut into the world's food supply.I agree with Sandra who said just about EVERYTHING thrown into landfills today can be recycled(or could have been reUsed!)and what remains can be incinerated as fuel(the emissions filtered of course!) We have to take care of Mother Earth or she will stop taking care of us!! a Great start is a worldwide effort, ReUseItNetwork.org Please join now, GIVE AWAY DONT THROW AWAY! I’m all for development of reasonable and cost effective alternative energy sources, but someone should ask Mr. Gore how "clean, renewable energy" (e.g. solar and wind) will do anything in the short or medium term for the farmer who GROWS OUR FOOD and who needs "dino juice" to run his tractors and other farm equipment, not to mention the trucker who brings it to local stores in his diesel powered truck.

While I don't agree with some of what Gore has to say, I do believe that our dependence on foreign oil is the pathway to our demise. And I certainly believe that each of us needs to do his part to reduce our "footprint" on our world. I work for a trash/recycling company and have come to learn that almost EVERYTHING that goes in the landfill is recyclable. And it's not a huge effort to sort it and make certain it gets to it's proper "home". Whether it's waste from a fruit and vegetable grower which goes to the local pig farmer or wood pallets to to the mulch maker, paper/cardboard to the toilet paper mill, or even used concrete to be pulverized into base for recycled concrete. And the items that absolutely have no market to be recycled can be incenerated into energy (they do it in Sweden -- they don't even have landfills, I'm told). I'm a fairly recent convert to tree-huggerdom and I'm totally committed to it. I hope more people will become involved.

gore is so TOTALLY wrong. the carbon offset is a scam. there is the growing bifurcation of americans. you are part of the ELITE or a grunt. most of YOU reading this are GRUNTS and YOU are supposed to sacrifice. how to stop the problems? easy. 1- you get water out of your tap. buying bottled water is dumb. get a filter. and buying it from france is stupid. it wastes oil making bottles, labels, shipping across the pond, trucking it all over the usa. STOP already. 2- stop buying junk from china. it is ALL made of plastic. IT IS PETROLEUM! do not buy it. make do with what you have. 3- do not buy fruit, veggies, meat, etc from other countries. shipping is OIL. 4- do not buy any 'throwaway' stuff. use pens? get the refillable kind. ditto lighters but smoking is maxi-carbon whatever is being smoked! 5- do NOT buy a new pc. the one you have is FINE for like 95% of you out there. it is 80% plastic. PETROLEUM!!! it is shipped here from other places: PETROLEUM! it costs more of YOUR money, so you need another job or overtime or you are blowing your joke incentive check. MORE PETROLEUM! 6- turn off the tube. less tv, less electricity [PETROLEUM!], less wear & tear and you do NOT need a new one. cuz new ones are ..... PETROLEUM! 7- *** this is VERY un-pc. deal with it. *** do NOT hire illegals. they 'demand' their own tv & radio stations as they do not understand english; fueled by PETROLEUM! they need their own papers in 'their' language, the ink being made from .... PETROLEUM! they use up more gas, and do NOT pay their fair share of taxes. and the vast majority [ in LA county anyhow ] use gas guzzler vehicles; pickups old pontiacs, etc. again, excessive use of ..... PETROLEUM! 8- you already know about 'slow down, max air in the tires, keep the thing tuned up, no rabbit driving ' . so do it already. as far as 'global warming' joke. it is SUPPOSED to get warm. people lived IN greenl

Come on, folks. Stop allowing your personal politics to affect reception of good ideas. You may not like Gore, but the fact that he *is* in the spotlight and is proposing ways to end our dependance on fossil fuels is commendable. We "peons" can say the same for decades and not be heard; personally speaking, I am glad he's there as a voice for change. Considering that British Petroleum CEOs are getting behind some of those same ideas, there must be some viable basis for his ideas.

Gore is practicing what he preaches as he has converted his ancestral home into a more eco-friendly place. He buys carbon credits to cover his air travel. And he NEVER said he invented the Internet. How much FOX Television are you gonna believe? Looking at some of these comments, apparently the answer is A LOT. So get the facts! Stop watching FOX and start reading Mother Earth News. For non-partisan and unbiased information on how to help our children and our planet. Its something even T. Bone Pickens could agree with!

Regardless of how you feel about Gore, the fact remains that fossil fuel dependency is sinking our economy, the environment and ruining the American way of life. Getting off of it as much as possible is one of the biggest no brainers in the history of humanity. (I said this as a 1st grader way back in the early sixties by the way, and got sent to the school shrink for my trouble.) Our company has a modified methane digestion system that is part of an integrated biofuels program for a waste to energy approach that is completely non-food based and by our calculations could produce as much as 1/3 of all energy in America purely from waste materials that are being thrown away every day. The Japanese are already building similar though less efficient plants. It also preserves the organic value of the material so it can be used as a safe renewable fertilizer, further reducing the dependency on fossil fuels and mined chemicals. We've already built prototypes and proven the system works and is safe, clean and reliable. I grow my vegetable garden in the plot of ground we used to test the fertilizer on. Now just try to find investors who have the sense or the guts to step up with the money to build these things. The system is called the ORB system, from Applied Ecotechnical Innovations, a division of BHFI corporation. So we could be 1/3 of the way towards the goal Gore is touting in almost zero time if people would just cough up some of the investment money, and considering it stands to make a decent real profit (about 30% annually) while doing a great deal of good for our world and country, it is something that someone should have done a long time ago. Comments and inquiries are welcome. Help spread the word that there are real workable answers already available that are being ignored by the popular media and most investors. AppEcoTech@gmail.com

Amazing someone as vocal about carbon footprints as he is would take a private jet to collect his nobel prize instead of commercial flight. And how about household square footage just how much do we need I believe he has an obscene amount unless he is a family of oh a dozen or more. And just how does he heat or light this monster???? (Practice what you preach please or should just the peeons conserve while the rich exploit?????

Gore is a idiot. He thinks he is a enviromentalist. Any idiot can tell you that we need to stop all fossil fuel usage, but he sure uses a lot of it. He can't stand not being in the spotlight. The liberal media fawns all over him. His theories have been proven false by some of the most renowned scientists in the world, but it gets very little news play.
