We’re trying it before you buy it.

Company: Kopali Organics
Product: Organic Goldenberry dried fruit
Editor’s score: 3.5/5

Why we liked it: Berry Delicious!

The package itself describes the product as “sweet and tangy,” and that is definitely what it is — with an emphasis on tangy. It’s so tangy, in fact, that it’s overwhelmingly sour, a major plus for the sour-candy lovers out there (3 out of the 5 taste testers I recruited thought these were tasty)! And with almost 10 grams less sugar than other popular sweet/sour candies plus a full serving of real fruit, it’s a healthier choice. They are also certified organic, and therefore free from harmful chemicals and funky genetically engineered ingredients.

The Goldenberry’s downfalls: Texture, color and overwhelming taste

If these are what I suspect that they are, the Goldenberry is actually a relative of the tomatillo. They're pretty easy to grow, albeit coming in a bit later than tomatoes. I have four plants on my deck in pots. (They're pretty zippy fresh as well, especially if you don't get them 100% ripe.) Look for seed companies selling Physalis peruviana (or the couple of variants) a.k.a Cape Gooseberry, Groundcherry.

Whole Foods had these out as samples the other day and they were delicious. Tangy. There were 2 other versions but the Goldenberry was really good while the others were just ok. And they taste nothing like raisins (which I never liked).

They definitely taste nothing like they look. They were surprisingly tasty!
