Mother Earth News posts nation’s biggest newsstand gains
2009 ABC publisher’s statement confirms leading sustainable-lifestyle magazine continues to grow
paid circulation at unprecedented rates

TOPEKA, Kan. (Sept. 14, 2009) — Mother Earth News grew faster than any other magazine on U.S. newsstands in the first half of the year with a 29 percent year-over-year increase in newsstand sales, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations FAS-FAX report, released Aug. 30.

The FAS-FAX report showed double-digit newsstand sales declines and flat overall paid circulation across the U.S. magazine industry for the first half of 2009 compared to the same period last year.

In stark contrast to industry trends, Mother Earth News’ overall paid circulation grew by 16 percent, continuing a five-year trend of steady, significant growth. Between June 2004 and June 2009, Mother Earth News’ newsstand sales increased 93 percent, from 63,851 to 123,303 copies. Overall paid circulation grew from 327,584 to 475,106 copies, a 45 percent gain.

Publisher and Editorial Director Bryan Welch attributes the gains to consumers’ growing desire to save money, preserve the environment and live more self-reliant lifestyles.
