Backyard chickens can provide a local food source, keep pests out of your garden, and much more. But what should you know before you start building a coop and creating a flock? Jennifer Pitino, host of the Urban Chicken Podcast, spoke with Pat Foreman, author of the books City Chicks, Chicken Tractor and Day Range Poultry, and Victoria Redhed Miller, author of Pure Poultry, on their experiences, and advice for raising and keeping chickens.
Jennifer Pitino is an avid, urban chicken keeper in Boise sharing her downtown, standard city lot backyard with a flock of six hens (the maximum number of chickens allowed under city code). She is a self-taught in all things chicken – including hand building two chicken coops using mostly reclaimed materials. Jennifer shares her insights and expertise on keeping backyard chickens on her podcast and blog, www.urbanchickenpodcast.com. She has also been a featured author in Backyard Poultry Magazine.
Victoria Redhed Miller grew up in Seattle and now lives with her husband, David, on their off-grid farm in the Olympic Mountain foothills near Sequim, Washington. She writes and blogs about homesteading and self-reliance, as well as speaking at events around the country. She is also the author of Pure Poultry: Living Well with Heritage Chickens, Turkeys and Ducks.
Patricia Foreman is a sustainable agriculture author, local foods activist, and popular speaker. She (and her co-presenter, chicken celebrity Oprah Hen-Free) has presented workshops and book signings at major national festivals and conferences across the United States. She is the author of City Chicks. To help “Chick Start America,” she developed the Backyard Chicken Keeper Certification course. Foreman graduated from Purdue University with degrees in animal science and pharmacy. She has a master's of public affairs from Indiana University’s Graduate School of Public and Environmental Affairs.
