Are you considering keeping bees? In this episode of Mother Earth News and Friends, podcast producer Robert Riley sits down with Master Beekeepers Becky and Steve Tipton, and Ethnobotanist Dawn Combs, who is a veteran in the realm of "natural beekeeping". These experts share their knowledge and discuss differences to help Robert and other beginners get up and going with their own colonies. Becky, Steve, and Dawn help prepare you for this upcoming adventure by covering bee species, swarming, pollinator friendly plants, when to smoke your bees, tools of the trade, and much more. If you are an experienced beekeeper you may even learn a new technique.
Becky Tipton and her husband, Steve, own Country Creek Honey and have been producing and selling honey for 30 years. Becky is past president of the NE KS Beekeepers Association, VP of the Kansas Honey Producers, and a master beekeeper. She teaches beekeeping and using products of the hive for skin care by making soaps, lotions, and balms. Their farm is just north of Topeka where they raise broiler chickens, laying hens, heritage turkeys and corriente cattle. They farm in partnership with their son and daughter-in-law, John & Tammy Tipton.
Dawn Combs is an ethnobotanist with more than 20 years of experience in her field. She is the owner of the herbal health farm Mockingbird Meadows, is a contributor for Mother Earth Living, and the author of Heal Local: 20 Essential Herbs for Do-it-Yourself Home Health Care. Dawn and her husband Carson began keeping bees to utilize honey in the creation of their health care products, as well as having the bees improve pollination efforts of the farm.
Steve has been a beekeeper for over 30 years. He received his master beekeeper award from the Univ. Of Nebraska, Midwest Master Beekeeper program. He loves sharing his passion for beekeeping. Retired from the Goodyear Tire Co engineering dept., he's made beekeeping his retirement job as well as other farming chores on our small Meriden, KS farm.
