Meet Alisa Shorey of the Pierce County Beekeeping Association.
What are you going to speak about at the MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR?
I will be speaking on Basic Beekeeping.
What are you most looking forward to sharing with FAIR attendees?
The importance of bees and our reliance on these tiny creatures and how they can help.
Tell us about your background with your particular topic.
I am the Past President of the Pierce County Beekeeping Association and a member of the Washington State Beekeepers Association and have several of my own hives.
Why should fairgoers attend your presentation?
We need to be more aware of our environment and how we can improve it for our children, and their children. How pesticides, and changes of DNA in produce pollinations can effect the health of our bees and what happens if we have NO bees.
Meet Jack McCornack of Kinetic Vehicles, makers of the MAX 100-mpg car.
How will you get to the Fair, and how far do you have to travel?
I'll drive MAX, of course. My home is Cave Junction, Oregon, and it's 427 miles by freeway or 561 miles if I come up the coast. I think it'll depend on the day, the weather, and my mood.
What are you most looking forward to at the Fair?
Meeting people of like mind, with similar goals but different ideas of how to achieve them.
What advice do you have for attendees?
Bring raingear! It's the beginning of summer...but it's still the Pacific Northwest.
If you were stranded on a deserted island and could have only one thing, what would you choose?
That's a tough one. If you mean "deserted" like "everybody went away" then probably a potfer--I could find everything else I need among the stuff that got deserted. But if you mean "deserted" like "got turned into a desert by carelessness and/or greed", then I'd bring a solar still, because I wouldn't even last long enough to get hungry if I didn't have water. And I don't know how to fish, and you can't grow food on a desert island so...
Okay, if I could have only one thing on a deserted island, they would be a solar still, a copy of Fishing for Dummies (the soft pages edition), and a potfer. If it was a desserted island, I would bring a spoon.
Thank you both. We'll see you at the FAIR!
