Ecosystems Are Overloaded With Excess Nitrogen

Resulting ecological damage and climate change is serious, but excess nitrogen in our ecosystem could be reduced by a wider use of more sustainable, time-honored practices.

Humans are overloading ecosystems with nitrogen through the burning of fossil fuels and an increase in nitrogen-producing industrial and agricultural activities, according to a new study. While nitrogen is an element that is essential to life, it is an environmental scourge at high levels.

According to the study, excess nitrogen that is contributed by human activities pollutes fresh waters and coastal zones, and may contribute to climate change. Nevertheless, such ecological damage could be reduced by the adoption of time-honored sustainable practices.

Appearing in the October 8, 2010 edition of Science and conducted by an international team of researchers, the study was partially funded by the National Science Foundation.

The Nitrogen Cycle

The nitrogen cycle, which has existed for billions of years, transforms non-biologically useful forms of nitrogen found in the atmosphere into various biologically useful forms of nitrogen that are needed by living things to create proteins, DNA and RNA, and by plants to grow and photosynthesize. The transformation of biologically useful forms of nitrogen to useful forms of nitrogen is known as nitrogen fixation.

Mostly mediated by bacteria that live in legume plant roots and soils, nitrogen fixation and other components of the nitrogen cycle weave and wind through the atmosphere, plants, subsurface plant roots and soils; the nitrogen cycle involves many natural feedback relationships between plants and microorganisms.

According to the Science paper, since pre-biotic times, the nitrogen cycle has gone through several major phases. The cycle was initially controlled by slow volcanic processes and lightning and then by anaerobic organisms as biological activity started. By about 2.5 billion years ago, as molecular oxygen appeared on Earth, a linked suite of microbial processes evolved to form the modern nitrogen cycle.

Ok, so you are saying what? Read some of the other comments and the article has more than a few inconsistencies!!!

Could not agree with T more!! This article is a classic example of "I have no idea what I writing about, but I need to say something.” Leading cause of eutrofication on many lakes has nothing to do with the addition of fertilizers, but rather septic fields leaching into the ground water, Lake Tahoe is one example of this. This article exemplifies the problem too often found in modern journals; actually it is an old trick, place a little bit of truth in and then add a bunch of other stuff, from guesses to outright lies. The true parts are readily recognized and then the lies slide right on down with it! The National Science Foundation has been caught several times over the years making half-baked and even outright false claims about a wide variety of items. Too bad the person writing this article for them did not consult with someone that actually knew all of the material well.

Publish or perish, I guess, justifies this paper. Burning fossil fuel increases atm N? It's already 78% N2 and virtually no N in coal or oil. GW & NO? It washes out with the rain That's acid rain- a different problem not exclusive to oxidized N. (But they had to include GW in order to get funding.) BTW- NO, being diatomic, is NOT a GHG. They should say NO2 if they want to press the point. Agronomic studies have shown that the vast majority of N run off in the US is from suburban homeowners misusing Weed & Feed, not farmers very conscious of the cost benefit ratio of adding fetilizer to their crops. They don't waste it. The rest of the world doesn't use enough fertilizers. That's among the reasons why their yield is so low. There is an unavoidable inefficiency in the use of artificial fertilizers, but unincorporated N from the chemicals applied quickly breaks down and returns to the atmosphere. That's why you have to fertilize every year. It doesn't build up in the soil. Eutrofication has many causes, not the least of which is the unwise dredging of natural streams by the Army C of E for flood control, ruining natural habitat for the organisms that control algae.
