California Cleans Its Clothes of Toxic Detergents

California is phasing out use of a potentially toxic detergent additive.

| June/July 2007

Did you know your dry cleaner probably uses perchloroethylene, a toxin linked to several types of cancers, to clean your finer threads? But now California is the first state to throw in the towel. Businesses there may not purchase perchloroethylene-dependent machines after 2008, and those already in place must phase out by 2023. Thankfully, perchloroethylene isn't the only option right now for the rest of the country.
