We have a Golden Retriever who is a full-time outdoor dog. Even though this breed is well equipped for cold weather, we still wanted to make sure she’d be warm enough during our cold nights in the San Joaquin Valley, with temps that sometimes dip into the 20s. She has an insulated doghouse, but she would consistently tear up any kind of rug or blanket that we used for lining.
My wife did some research and found that straw makes great bedding for dogs. After all, farmers have been using straw for livestock bedding for centuries.
A single bale of straw was inexpensive and went a long way. When the weather began to warm up again, I was able to reuse this wonderful straw bedding in the garden as straw bale mulch.
