Vantem Outdoor Living, a division of Vantem Composite Technologies, a leading manufacturer of structural insulated panels, has partnered with Lowe’s Home Improvement to bring state-of-the-art technology sheds and workspace structures to consumers. The backyard product line, known as GreenOx, will be sold in 1,700 retail locations nationwide, as well as on-line.

Developed by Jay Thompson, president of Vantem Outdoor Living, GreenOx sheds employ cutting edge technology more recently seen utilized in green building practice and now applied to backyard structures for the first time. Made with Magnesium Oxide (MgO) structural insulated panels (SIPs), the sheds deliver high levels of insulation and are not drafty like traditional sheds, thereby improving energy efficiency by up to 50 percent when heated or cooled. As SIPs are typically made by sandwiching a core of rigid foam plastic insulation between two structural skins of oriented strand board (OSB), they create a custom-sized wall that can be installed in one piece resulting in a structure that is extremely strong.

“The use of SIPs and a proprietary framing system offer benefits far beyond the typical wood, metal or resin structures, and the result is small, very durable buildings that you’ll actually want to spend time in,” said Mr. Thompson. “While the concept of SIP technologies has been around for years, the limitation has always been the wood component used for the exterior of the panel. Our exclusive use of MgO in replacement of OSB enables us to achieve the same strength and efficiency gains in a configuration that will not rot, mold and is essentially fire and pest resistant. It’s our hope that in seeing green technology deployed in this unique context, consumers will begin understanding how high performance materials will benefit them.”
