Presented by Recargo with help from PlugShare and PluginCars.com, this infographic reveals exciting new statistics on electric vehicle charging stations on the North American continent. View the full infographic on the Recargo website.
There were a mere 1,972 electric car charging stations inside the United States in January of 2011. Just two years later, in May 2013, a recount discovered 20,138 electric vehicle charging stations. California sits at the top of the states' list, with the highest number of EV charging stations in the country. In short, the availability for plugging in has gone off the charts.
Correlating with this increase in EV stations is the number of electric cars and plug-in hybrids in operation. Electric cars are charging onto the scene, and their numbers are consistently rising. According to Recargo, "By the end of 2013, there will be more than 170,000 plug-in vehicles on U.S. roads." The number of charging stations will also continue to rise to support this boom in EV popularity, allowing EV drivers the freedom and ease to travel about the country.
Another encouraging fact is that plug-sharing has also increased from 2,808 shared charging stations in January 2012 to 4,785 shared stations in May 2013. Plug-sharing is exactly what it sounds like: Residents allow others to use their personal charging stations through the charging station finding tool known as PlugShare. This tool not only encourages growth in the number of EVs around the country, but also fosters a sense of community among EV owners.
