The need to go greener in your home has never been more pressing. But many homeowners struggle to understand how they can create the change they wish to see. The tips below should inspire you to begin your own journey towards a more sustainable way of life:

1. Go Greener in Your Home with Green Energy

Even it is not possible to install your own means of renewable power generation, you may still be able to afford a small additional cost to switch to a renewable energy supplier for your mains electricity.

Install solar panels to make the most of the energy provided by the sun.

Think about passive solar design – creating more windows on the south side of your home (in the northern hemisphere) and making sure there is plenty of thermal mass (stone, brick, ceramics etc.) to absorb the sun's heat are other ways to make the most of the energy from the sun.

Install a wind turbine.

One of the things that you failed to mention in your list regarding going greener in regards to reducing, reducing and recycling in regards to food is the idea of either planning meals to avoid having leftovers at all or planning to use leftovers in future meals. The simplest way to do this is to reuse your evening meal as the next day's lunch, but there are so many other ways this can be done. Considering that the average American wastes 40% of food at the post consumer level, this means not only not sending less food to the land fill, but also leaving more money in the pocket. In addition, I take food that I would normally put in the compost or feed to the chickens and recycle it as well. I take chicken bones and boil to make chicken broth, I take leftover pieces of fresh onion celery and pepper and cut them up and put them on a cookie sheet in the freezer and when frozen transfer to use at a later date. I also take bread heels (the end crusts) and throw them into the freezer and when I have enough I use them for making bread crumbs, stuffing, croutons, and bread pudding.
