Yogurt Culture Options

I have just started to make my own yogurt. Can Probiotics that are sold as health supplements be used to create yogurt? Most are live cultures but are these bacteris the same?

No.  Different.  Or so the local cheese and yogurt users I work with think. 

 

I can pass some tips: 1) ratio of 'mother' to milk/cream is 1 to 3.  2) Mother has to be fed, usually weekly, depending on weather.  3) Use purchased mother to start your own, do not do the 'spoil the milk in the sealed container' method, you can get other not-so-nice virii.  4) Whole natural grass fed milk is the milk of choice, after being pasteurized (?) at 180 degrees quickly, then drop to about 80.  This is both for feeding the mother, and for the yogurt.  5) store bought 'half-and-half' does not make a good feed for your mother.

Mos important, be careful and sanitary, and have fun.
