'Do It Yourself' can mean a million different things: tools, projects — wood, metal, plastic — plumbing, wiring, welding — woodworking, house building, auto repair.

What's something that you've always considered doing yourself but never investigated? Making paper? Smelting ore and purifying metal? Applying enamel coating to a bowl? Spinning linen from flax? Building a flying machine? Filling a cavity in your own tooth?

What's the most far-out DIY project you can think of?

I would like to build a house from railway sleepers / railroad ties using modern established log house building techniques. The cost of the bare house, on pillar supports, before land purchase, roofing, plumbing and internal walls etc could be under $20,000 for a house with 8' high walls (standard) and 32' long sides depending on type of sleepers bought and discount for bulk. The ties could also be used for internal walls, vary solid and reducing noise which travels through modern spit and cardboard walls.Paint or leave natural. It has been said that a 3 ' roof overhang is desirable to keep the rain off the exterior walls.

i've always had an idea after watching a PBS special a few years back to build a lifsize(or just really big) trebouche' seige machine. I built a small(about 8-10" high) model in college that shot a small ball about 15yards and had plans to build a 8-10' high model to shoot some rocks or other objects across a feild but i never got around to it. The machanics of it are pretty simple as long at the arm of the beast is at the right ratio to the pouch and the counter weight. The problem is manpower to build a large model.
