Heritage Chickens, Green Cars and Homesteaders Descend On Puyallup Fairgrounds
Off-stage demonstrations will complement 150-plus workshops at the Mother Earth News Fair

PUYALLUP, Wash. (May 15, 2012) — When you hear the word “fair,” do visions of funnel cakes, carnival rides and dunk tanks dance in your head? The Mother Earth News Fair brings a different type of celebration to the Puyallup Fairgrounds June 2-3, featuring eco-friendly workshops and demonstrations.

Attendees also can participate in these novel off-stage activities throughout the weekend:

Alternative Energy Car Show: See a variety of green crs from the Seattle, Tacoma and Vashon Island Electric Vehicle Associations, including the Tesla Roadster, Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi i-MiEv, Chevy Volt and more.

Fort Nisqually Historical Museum Demonstrations: Reenactors will provide demonstrations of Dutch oven cooking, blacksmithing, rope making, spinning fiber into yarn, and timber squaring.

Manna Pro Presents the PNPA Poultry Show: This American Poultry Association-approved poultry show will feature 380 birds and highlight heritage breeds.

Heirloom Seed Display: Find out what GMOs are, learn about open-pollination and hybridization, and more. Sponsored by Botanical Interests and Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply.

Earthen Oven Demonstration: Join Kiko Denzer as he builds a functional wood-fired oven from dirt. Ask questions, see a working display oven, and learn how to manage a woodpile and fire to use fuel effectively.

Wolf Creek and Wolf College Classes: Learn how to start fires with friction, cook wild edible foods, make bows and arrows, tan hides and more.

“We want to engage people’s imaginations and inspire them to live sustainably and save money,” says Event Director Andrew Perkins. “What better way to get people excited than to bring these concepts to life?”

In addition, more than 150 hands-on workshops will cover organic gardening, real food, renewable energy, small-scale livestock, green building and remodeling, DIY projects, natural health, green transportation, and related topics. Green lifestyle and rural living experts including Joel Salatin, Ed Begley Jr., Carol Ekarius, Jessi Bloom, Paul Stamets, Linda Gilkeson and Sherri Brooks Vinton will speak.

The Fair also will host children’s activities, a green shopping pavilion, vendor and livestock demonstrations, and local and organic food options.

Adult tickets are $25 for a weekend pass or $15 for a one-day pass in advance, or $30 and $20, respectively, at the gate. Children 17 and under get in free. To purchase advance tickets, go to or call toll-free 800-234-3368.

Attendees can receive a free weekend or single-day ticket when they bring a cell phone to recycle at the Fair, sponsored by T-Mobile.

The Fair is sponsored by Bob’s Red Mill, Bon Ami, Botanical Interests, Earthineer, Envirolet, Manna Pro, Organic Valley, Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply and T-Mobile.
