Avoid Crop Damage From Killer Compost

Unless you made it yourself, don't assume compost is safe. Residue from herbicides intended to control weeds can cause crop damage in your garden.

It might look good, but killer compost infused with herbicide residue can cause crop damage.

If you’re planning to bring compost, manure, hay, or other mulches into your garden, be aware that there are some widely used herbicides that can persist in these materials and cause crop damage.

If you can’t confirm with the source that you’re getting safe compost or killer compost, there is a way you can plant a few seeds in a sample to test whether herbicide residues are present. See our home test for safe compost for directions, along with links to other reports on this unfortunate situation.
