Made in Brazil with sustainable natural rainforest rubber, this unique backpack is an eco-friendly alternative to leather. Treetap® is a plant material with natural and seasonal variations that produce hues ranging from light brown to very dark brown. Organic cotton adjustable canvas straps can be quickly altered in length to fit your size perfectly, and the zippered closure up top makes access easy to the main compartment.
Our eco-friendly backpack is manufactured from Treetap®, a product that comes from rubber trees in the Amazon. Indigenous tree tappers "milk" these wild plants in the jungle for their sap. The sap from these Hevea brasiliensis is natural latex and after being sustain ably harvested (trees are rotated every two years) it is filtered and layered onto cotton backing. This is smoke cured, half a dozen times or so, and sun dried to vulcanize or "set" the latex.
By producing Treetap® using traditional, low-impact practices, the communities improve their quality of life without degrading their environment. Plant tappers earn fair-wages, and the forested regions in which the plants grow are undergoing Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. With the growth of cattle and livestock breeding – activities responsible for rampant forest clearing – and plantation-grown rubber, this represents both a sustainable and viable alternative economic model for hundreds of forest communities wanting to preserve their home and lifestyle.
