Using vegetable oils as a fuel for home heating and transportation is a hundred years old. Rudolf Diesel's original engine was operated on plant oils because of the lack of fossil fuels. Later, plant and animal oils were converted into a petrodiesel-compatible fuel known as biodiesel; a clean, low-carbon fuel.

In the early 1980s, home brewers discovered they could transform waste restaurant fryer oils into crude biodiesel and use it in automobiles at 100% concentrations at one quarter the cost of petrodiesel. Yet automotive and engine manufacturers insist that late-model vehicles may be damaged when run on high concentrations of biodiesel and may not honor engine warranties where biodiesel fuel has been used.

This 556-page book aims to separate fact from fiction on the economic production of quality biodiesel. It includes a list of suppliers, descriptions of detailed processes, a guide to numerous reference materials, and lists the equipment required to produce biodiesel that meets North American standards.

ALCOHOL FUEL - MAKING AND USING ETHANOL AS A RENEWABLE FUEL

Richard Freudenberger
Paperback

Price: $26.95

Dwindling petroleum supplies and growing environmental concerns are significantly impacting the cost of non-renewable fuel and its infrastructure. The search for alternative fuel sources has led to the use of ethanol, a gasoline substitute that can be manufactured on a local level. But the large-scale production of corn-based ethanol fuels is controversial, as it threatens the world's food supply. However, ethanol fuels lend themselves perfectly to small-scale individual production, and especially to cooperative ventures in rural and urban fringe communities, often using agricultural cull and "waste" feedstock gleaned from commercial and manufacturing sources. Alcohol Fuel is a detailed roadmap to the use and production of ethanol as a renewable fuel.

This practical, grass-roots book gives you all the information you need to produce and use ethanol as fuel on a small, sustainable scale. From beginning to end, it is the complete guide to ethanol fuel-production at every stage. Learn about:

  • Permitting and planning
  • Budgeting and setup
  • Sourcing and economical feedstocks
  • Finding and building distillation equipment
  • Storage and safety
  • Practical applications for converting motor vehicles, farm equipment and space heating systems.

The user-friendly information on basic equipment needs, fermentation recipes and distillation designs will be of interest to readers looking for detailed information on the production of ethanol as well as those ready to make the switch to alternative fuel sources. Alcohol Fuel is the essential how-to book on the use and production of ethanol as a renewable fuel, and it will be your ultimate guide to small scale ethanol production.

About the Author:

Richard Freudenberger was research director with MOTHER EARTH NEWS, managing the Alcohol Fuel Program and developing solar and renewable energy projects, as well as high-mileage transportation alternatives. He is publisher and technical editor of BackHome Magazine/em> and lives in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
