The House Passes the Energy and Climate Change Bill

On Friday evening the U.S. House of Representatives passed the energy and climate change bill, which mandates the reduction of greenhouse gases and create green jobs.

The vote was 219-212; the bill needed 218 to pass. This vote sent Democrats into recess with a high-profile win. The vote was politically tough for some Democrats, 44 voted against the bill. Only eight Republicans voted for the bill.

The principal sponsors of the bill, Democratic Representatives Henry Waxman of California and Ed Markey of Massachusetts compromised with Democrats in rural states that rely on coal for energy, weakening the requirements of newer green energy technology.

The bill is still considered an environmental success and had the support of the majority of the public. An ABC/Washington Post survey this week showed that 56 percent of Americans supported action to reduce carbon emissions, even if it raised energy bills by $10 a month, which is an estimate of how much the passage of the bill will cost consumers.

National Journal created an interactive map to show readers how Representatives voted.

Shortly after the Fourth of July recess the Senate will take up the House version of the bill. It is unclear if the bill will pass in the Senate. The Democrats have 59 Senate seats and would need 60 votes to beat a Republican filibuster, but it is unlikely that all 59 Democrats will vote for the bill.

Mankind is the most dangerous animal of all. We are the only creature who can destroy whole planets and wipe out entire species with our destructive and greedy ways. The Earth would be much better off if we didn't have nuclear weapons to bomb and poison it. We've got chemical factories, strip mining, air pollution and a host of other devices (biological weapons as well) to wipe out every mammal on Earth. We ARE in danger and the danger is us.

I do not understand how 56% of the population wants this bill, when congress doesn't even know what is in it, we have only heard a few things that are in it and they sound like a nightmare, what is in the 1300 pages we are not seeing. We are all for saving the planet, not that I think it needs saving,I think this earth has taken care of itself quite well over the last some odd million years, we are still here! what more proof do we need, with that being said, ok there some out there that believe the earth will explode or die somehow if we do not act fast, be careful what you wish for just because a bill says it will save the environment doesn't mean it will, but new rules and regulations, you bet those will be in there, and more of our personal rights will be taken away, and at the cost of business moving over seas,we can not survive with out it,where are you going to get the seeds to plant your garden, and are you going to be happy when the government comes calling and says, wait a minute, you have to have a permit to grow your own food and it has to be approved by us. Just a thought don't wish for something we haven't seen yet, and don't assume it will help us all to save our planet, most the time if you follow the money you will see its all about the profit to be made, not how it will conserve energy.
