Now that the dust has settled from the Mother Earth News Fair in Puyallup, Washington and is now preparing to cause an organic homesteading stir in Seven Springs, Pennsylvania, I just wanted to express my gratitude for the amazing time that I had in Puyallup. My boyfriend and I traveled from Orlando, FL with the expectation that we were going to encounter a life-changing experience. From the cramped seating on our flights, time change adjusting and dealing with the drastic temperature change, it was well worth it. I felt like a kid in a candy store.

Sometimes on the sustainable and organic journey, it can get lonely. However, when I went to the Mother Earth News Fair, it was so nice to talk with people that are like me. Foodies, organic farmers, sustainability experts and other interested parties. I remember sitting in the VIP lounge, talking about Codex Alimentarius and feeling so glad that the person I was speaking to didn’t think I came from Mars. And of course, the speakers were awesome!

Will Allen, Joel Salatin and Paul Stamets were a few of the great speakers at the Fair. Not only that, the vendors were unique and offered so much information that I made it a point to capture business cards, analysis reports, and as many books that would fit in my suitcase. The best part of it all was being able to eat an organic hamburger and fries. It was so good that I had it for breakfast and lunch! But what I brought back home was inspiration.

When I woke up to a rainy morning in Puyallup heading back to the blistering heat of Orlando, I made my voyage back home in deep thought. Wondering what I could do with all I learned. I decided to take action. Currently, I work as an intern at Sahib Aquaponics in Winter Park, FL. I assist in the upkeep of the research farm and write blog posts to share the good news with as many that will read what I have to say. I also provide content for Blackanomics on Sirius XM Channel 128. My segment focuses on health, wellness, and food security. Getting acquainted with fish poo and deep water culture rafts is the start of my love affair with food security and the Mother Earth News Fair was instrumental in me taking action.

So as the next Fair approaches, perhaps you might see us there. Lying peacefully on an organic green tea mattresses, or tasting soups, smoothies or freeze dried peas and pineapples. But even if we’re not, it is my hope that someone who is thinking about going should go. I know it will change your life. Just like it changed mine.

You are so right, it does get lonely on this journey of trying to eat/grow organic food. It is amazing to me how unsupportive people can be. I have found I encounter this attitude anytime I go outside of the cultural norm. Glad you got support and feel energized in your decision!
