Get to know Sherri Brooks Vinton of Storey Publishing.
What are you going to speak about at the MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR?
I am going to be covering the Boiling Water Method, the most popular method for preserving your own food at home. It’s such a simple technique that covers so much ground. With it you can put up so many things: jams, jellies, salsas, chutneys, pickles, fruit, tomatoes and more. And it’s much easier than many think. It doesn’t require a lot of extra kitchen equipment or special knowledge. If you can boil water, you can have a bountiful pantry all year round.
What are you most looking forward to sharing with FAIR attendees?
I look forward to returning to the MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR this year to talk about preserving food at home. It’s such a joy to share this time-honored craft with the MOTHER EARTH NERWS community, many of whom have been canning for decades and some who are new to the technique. I love sharing memories of the home preserved foods we grew up with and our aspirations for building an increasingly delicious pantry!
Tell us about your background with your particular topic.
I help eaters use their food choices to better support local agriculture. Through my writing and workshops I offer the sourcing, cooking and preserving techniques that eaters can use to build a better food future. I also wrote the book Put ‘Em Up!, which is all about canning.
Why should fairgoers attend your presentation?
My presentation is for anyone who enjoys or wants to learn about preserving their own food. We’ll cover the basic techniques, talk about tips and tricks for successful home food preservation and share war stories from the kitchen. It’s going to be a good time!
How will you get to the FAIR, and how far do you have to travel?
I will be flying in from another engagement in Rhode Island.
What are you most looking forward to at the FAIR?
I love the sense of community around MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIRS. Everyone is pulling for the same team – team Earth – and there’s a terrific connection between all of the attendees and presenters because of it.
What advice do you have for attendees?
Everyone in the sustainability community has something to teach, something to offer. So tell your story. We can all learn from each other.
If you were stranded on a deserted island and could have only one thing, what would you choose?
A good chef’s knife – it’s one of the few pieces of equipment that every cook needs.
Thanks, Sherri. We’ll see you at the FAIR!
