Get to know Anh Thu Hoang of Joy Bliss Raw.
What are you going to speak about at the MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR?
I will demonstrate how to make two easy, healthy and delicious recipes. For most people starting out on raw foods, these two will be good to know and learn: green smoothies and a quick 5-minute chocolate cake. I will also share some basic raw advice for those who want to adopt a healthier (raw) lifestyle.
What are you most looking forward to sharing with FAIR attendees?
I think many people have misconceptions about raw food and what it is like to be raw. There is certainly a lot of information out there about what’s good and bad for you. We are bombarded with information – some of it contradictory – every day, so it can be quite confusing for people who want to change their eating habits. Everyone has to make their own choice and commit to them to become healthier. I think I can talk about healthy options without too much technical jargon so people can actually start to make small changes in their daily lives.
Tell us about your background with your particular topic.
I have a Masters degree in public health. I studied health communication and education in graduate school so I understand very well that behavior change is very complex. I also went to raw food school where I learned how to make gourmet raw food! I enjoy preparing raw food and showing people how to make them. In the Washington, D.C. area I provide one-on-one coaching as well as group classes. I’ve been raw more or less for three years.
Why should fairgoers attend your presentation?
Well, I imagine most people are interested in becoming their best selves, living their best lives. I think that what I can share can be life-changing. We can all do more to make us be better people and lead more productive lives. I believe raw food can do that!
How will you get to the FAIR, and how far do you have to travel?
I live in Bethesda, MD, so I believe it’ll take me four hours to get to the FAIR. It’s approximately 180 miles.
What are you most looking forward to at the FAIR?
Meeting people who are motivated to change their lifestyle for the better. It’s always something I look forward to, meeting people who are interested in seeking a healthier way of life.
What advice do you have for attendees?
I firmly believe that everyone can make a difference in the lives of others. We don’t all have to be working in social work in order to effect positive changes in the lives of others. I think it has to start with each person. And so in that regard, I think that what I teach people to do goes beyond preparing healthy food. It’s food for the body and soul!
If you were stranded on a deserted island and could have only one thing, what would you choose?
This is a tough question. Provided that food and water are available, I would have to say a book or books!
Thanks, Thu. We’ll see you at the FAIR!
