With the popularity of honeybee keeping rising, The Fresh Honey Cookbook (Storey Publishing, 2013) is an invaluable resource for those who keep their own bees, or just want to support local beekeepers in their area. Laurey Masterton presents twelve months worth of recipes that feature seasonal ingredients and different varieties of honey. The Mulled Apple Cider Recipe is found in Chapter 11, “November.”

If you are having guests over when it is apple cider season, put a pot of this on the back burner of your stove about an hour before everyone arrives. By the time they get to your house, it will be filled with the aroma of the cider, the spices, and the oranges.
Having kids in for a sledding party? This is a great hot drink for the parents as the kids warm up with hot chocolate. If the kids want some hot cider, serve it to them in a cup with a whole stick of cinnamon, and show them how to use it as a straw. De-lish!
1 gallon apple cider
1 orange, unpeeled, cut into slices
1/4 cup whole cloves
4 sticks cinnamon
1/4 cup honey
1 cup sherry (optional)
Combine the cider, orange slices, cloves, cinnamon, and honey in a large pot over medium heat. If you are picky about things floating in your cider, make a little bundle out of cheesecloth and place the cinnamon and cloves inside before adding to the cider. I like to chew on cloves, so I just toss everything in.
Bring to a boil, and then reduce to a simmer over low heat for an hour or so to spread these lovely winter aromas around your home. If you’re serving it to adults, add the sherry, as my mother did. It might make everyone want to go sledding! Serves 16.
