Many Natural Cereals Contain GMOs, Study Finds

Robyn Griggs Lawrence thumbnailThink you’re avoiding genetically modified ingredients when you buy cereal labeled “natural?” Unfortunately, that’s probably not the case.

A new report by The Organic & Non-GMO Report has found that many breakfast cereals labeled “natural” are likely to contain genetically modified corn, soy, canola and sugar beets, Ken Roseboro reports on EatDrinkBetter. Several natural cereal manufacturers admitted that their products may contain GM ingredients. GM ingredients are prohibited in certified organic food products.

Malt-O-Meal, which manufactures Mom’s Best Cereals; Quaker Oats, which manufactures Mother’s Natural Cereals; Bear River Valley Natural Cereals and Kashi, which is owned by Kellogg’s, all admitted that their products likely contain GMOs. Kashi stated that “many factors outside our control, such as pollen drift from nearby crops and current practices in agricultural storage, handling, and shipping, have led to an environment in North America where GMOs are not sufficiently controlled.” Bear Naked would not comment.

As we’ve noted before, seeing “natural” on a label means very little. The claim is not regulated, and buying certified organic foods is the only way to keep GMOs off your family’s table.

This is for Mama Bear. My husband and I have 15 acres of grapes, aronia berries, orchard and garden, plus belong to a food coop. It is still impossible to purchase all food pesticide and GMO free especially when eating out. We use energetic wellness tools on our foods to neutralize the waveform of pesticides and GMO's. You are welcome to contact me if you would like more information. sageleaves@aol.com

I might add to Black Gadfly, that Certified Organic only means that there was no "applied" insecticide and herbacides used, NOT that they didn't use GMO seeds initially; which is nearly impossible to avoid...

Black gadfly, some of us can not tolerate genetically modified food. I get sick from it. This is good information. It is the USDA, FDA, etc that think that Big Agriculture and Big Pharma are its customers instead of the American public/consumer that has created the disinformation. GM foods should be labeled. Consumers should have a choice.

Just because a product is certified organic does not mean it is free of GMO's. This misinformation campaign must stop. GMO's are an excluded method not a prohibited substance. GMO's are in organic foods whether you like it or not. They cannot be contained and there is genetic pollution of wind and insect pollinated species in organic corn, wheat and canola and members of the chenopodaceae family to name only a few. Please recall your statement that organic cereals are GMO free, because it is impossible to be.
