stuffing mix

Making your own convenience food is so easy!

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas plenty of stuffing is consumed! Others eat stuffing year round as a quick side dish. Many people turn to the box stuff because it's a timesaver, but making your own mix is a cinch!

Why should you make your own stuffing mix? First, you will be using up stale bread and rescuing veggies destined for the composter! Second, you will always have a mason jar at-the-ready for times when you need an effortless side dish or to stuff a bird.

What to do:

There are three components to making stuffing mix: Dried bread, dried veggies and dried spices.

Bread: Never throw away stale bread. Slice it up into cubes and place on a tray. Cover the tray loosely with a tea towel and allow to dry out throughouly.

Vegetables: Finely chop celery, carrots and onions (and any other vegetable that you would like to add) or blitz in a food processor.  This is the time to use up that celery that has seen better days!  If you do not own a food dehydrator, use your oven to thoroughly dry out the vegetables until no moisture is present.

Spices: If you've grown your own herbs, hang a bundle upside down to dry. Otherwise, round up your dried spices and get ready to make something delicious!

Now that everything is dried and ready to go, it's time to combine everything! Here's our general recipe.

Homemade Stuffing Mix

(enough to fill one quart jar)

  • 3 cups of dried bread cubes
  • 1 cup of mixed dried veggies
  • 2-3 tsps mixed dried spices (savory, oregano, basil, marjoram, rosemary, or thyme)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • pepper

Store in an airtight mason jar! When ready to use, add 2-4 cups of water (depending on how mushy or dry you like your stuffing to be) to a saucepan and bring to a boil. Add 1 tsp of butter. Add stuffing mix and stir to cook through. So easy and delicious! You'll never be running to the store for a box of stuffing mix again!
