You need at least two electric fans to successfully practice cross-ventilation.
As summer temperatures rise, so does the urge to flip on the air conditioning. But giving in to those urges will only cost you later in the form of higher electric bills. Luckily, after you know how to keep your house cool without air conditioning, you don’t have to suffer through the heat in order to save money.
Instead, in an open window, place an electric fan facing toward the outside. Then, open a window in a normally cooler part of the house, preferably where there’s a tree or other shade outside. As the outside-facing fan pulls hot air out of the house, it will also pull in cooler air from the open window to create an air draft, which will help to cool the house.
To cool things down even more, hang damp sheets or towels from your doorways. As the air gets pulled through the house, it will be further cooled as the dampness in the fabrics evaporates.
