Canada's ecoENERGY Program to End in 2011

At Natural Home, we’ve always admired our neighbors to the north. Our Canadian readers are smart, savvy environmentalists who work hard to make their homes energy-efficient, build a green economy and fight climate change.

For many years, the Canadian government helped in that quest by offering money to help homeowners retrofit for energy efficiency. In late March, however, the  Office of Energy Efficiency’s ecoENERGY program announced that it would stop accepting new applicants and that the program would end on March 31, 2011.

Almost immediately following the announcement, a Facebook group called “Keep the ecoENERGY Retrofit – Homes Program Alive!” cropped up. Within a week, it had more than 550 members; now it has more than 1,400 members. The group calls for an extension of the program and encourages Canadians to write letters to local politicians and media outlets, offering politicians’ contact information and suggesting appropriate language to use in the letters.

The Facebook group and its campaign are maintained by Green Communities Canada. The Canadian government may be turning its back on energy efficiency, but the Canadian public sure isn’t.
