Hand Forged Broad AxeHandcrafted, heirloom-quality hand tools are difficult to find these days. The period in history when metal tools were made by the local blacksmith, and handles crafted by a master woodworker, is long gone. There still are American-made tools to be found online and in catalogs, such as Lee Valley ToolsJohnny’s Selected Seeds and the Scythe Supply.

But if you want the ultimate in a handcrafted tool, consider making one yourself. Maine resident, wooden yurt builder and author Bill Coperthwaite has designed a broad axe you can make in your own workshop. It’s not something that can be accomplished in a weekend. But the process and the final product will be worth the effort. As you hack limbs from trees and split kindling with your broad axe, you’ll feel a warm sense of satisfaction for a job well done.
