After having seven hens and a rooster taken mainly by hawks, we decided to try to figure out a way to keep our 10 remaining pullets and cockerels safe.

I had heard that if a hawk looks down at prey and sees that it’s in an area the hawk may not be able to get out of easily, the hawk will leave the prey alone. We took twine and created a “spider web” over the pen we use for the fryers (our layers range freely when we leave our dog out to keep the hawks away).

So far, we have seen hawks flying overhead, but we still have all 10 birds! We have to duck from time to time to get into the pen, but I would rather duck under twine than lose any more chickens.
